Great advice. And to compare that DIY design against the Illumitex NeoSol DS:

The DS draws 515W, LED dissipation is about 440W, 30% efficient so that is 132 PAR W for $2400 ($18/PAR W)
The DIY draws 675W, LED dissipation is about 624W, 43.3% efficient so that is 270 PAR W for $1100 ($4/PAR W)
Those are ridiculous numbers! Wow!

So I decided to pull the trigger and start off building two of the above suggeted to start out with. I stumbled upon 2 HLG-500-C500A's for sale and figured it was fate.

I would like to run 4 50W on each and my understanding is those drivers will do that.

What kind of coverage think a 5.88x30" x2 heatsinks with 4 50w COBS each will give me?

Yes I ordered 2 HLG-120-C500A thos afternoon from Sager. Based on what I read in the other thread they were the way to go and could do 4-5 CXA3070's.

At 500mA the CXA3070 runs at about 34Vf (17W) so that driver should be able to run a string of about 8. The HLG-185H-C1050 can run (5) CXA3070s at 1.05A (38W ea), maybe that was the one you saw?

Gotcha so if you have the HLG-185H-C500A then you could run (5) CXA3590s at 500mA (35W) ea
That's what I got. Although I'm not going to lie, I got scared that I got the wrong one and had to go double check my order. It's been a crazy day and all these part numbers are a lot to take in at once. I'm usually not this slow.

Nogod and I were referring to the HLG-185H-C1400, which can drive (3) Vero29s or CXA3070s at 50W ea. Did you find HLG-120H-C500A?
What is the maximum wattages that one can have out of CXA3070, CXA3590 Cob and also how do you calculate the wattages you will get according to the driver used?

The CXA3070 can go up to 117W, the CXA3590 up to 150W, and the Vero 29 up to 170W. Once you know how many amps the driver will put out you can check the COB manufacturer PDF to estimate the voltage at that current. Then amps*volts=Watts.

Some common currents:
@.7A
CXA3070 = 24.5W
CXA3590 (77V class) = 51W
Vero29 (not recommended at this current) = 24.6W

@1.4A
CXA3070 = 52W
CXA3590 (36V class) = 51W
Vero29 = 51W

@2.1A
CXA3070 (not recommended at this current) = 83W
CXA3590 (36V class) = 80W
Vero 29 = 79W

One way to figure those type things out with any led is to google the led datasheet. For example...cree cxa 3070 datasheet...that will pull up the official cree datasheet.

Scroll towards the bottom and look at the forward voltage vs current graphs. Pick your current and see what the corresponding voltage is. Multiply voltage x current to get the estimated wattage.

To find out the efficiency, again go to the cree site, and click on support/tools link. One of the tools will allow you to pick any cree led and see how efficient it is at most current levels.

Supra also has many led spreadsheets throughout this thread that make it very easy to pick a suitable current to run for all the best leds.

Been awhile since any updates. Nothing too exciting just pheno hunting. Getting well over 1 gpw every run but no record breaking numbers, probably due to my messing around with the soil mix lately. CO2 is 800-900 steady.These ladies are all at 49 days

They veg better than any other tech. 300W would more than rock a 5X5. If you have a lot of vertical space you can use large cool white COBs and if you are very height limited like a shelf style you can use Vero 10s or Cree XPLs.

If you use Vero 29/CXA3070/CXA3590 at 1.4A (51W), 6 would do the job with a pair of Mean Well HLG-185H-C1400 dimmable drivers.

Vero 29 5000K X 6 = $170
HLG-185H-C1400 X 2 = $140
Alpine11X6=$60
5V Fan PSU = $5
$375 + misc wire connectors etc

From what I've read you can up the efficiency of the output significantly by running the 3070's and such type lights at lower amperages. Still get excellent results. Costs a lot more though in captial investment as you need more of them to get the same output running them like that.

I run CXA3070 3000K AB bin at 800mA with these drivers (drivers 90.5% efficient on 120V AC, currently sold out unfortunately). They are installed on some giant heatsinks that I had extras of, running passive cooled even though the heatsinks are not the most ideal shape for passive, they are big enough to make up for it and they get a slight breeze from the circulation fan. 10.08"X6" pieces for 57W each.

I hang them individually so I can adjust to the canopy. I need the adjustability because I am always geno hunting 10-12 different varieties in each run and many of them are floppy sativa dom. That makes for an unruly canopy so you need a hard hat to go in these tents. Only takes a few minutes to adjust the modules and I will bend the tops and tie them up to try and cover the canopy as efficiently as I can without spend much time on it.

I added a few red/blue strings with the very best LEDs available, but efficiency is lower, labor is higher, cost is higher and they are suffering more from the lack of reflectors/lenses.

If I had to start all over again, I would stay with CXA3070 3000K AB but I would have used HLG-185H-C700B drivers and 5.88X14" or 4.9"X16" heatsinks.
