The lec will either hang on the rail with the DE or I'll throw the pair in a 4by4 tent and see what happens.
I bought the 4200k 315 for veg . Don't remember who but someone wasn't that impressed with the results they had with the 4200k lamp. I figure I'll find out for myself.
Damn, two of em in a 4x4 would really be packing em in!
I used the 4200k lamp for veg on my plants, I believe it was at your recommendation and groerr's when I started my journal thread. I'm glad I did since the plants vegged great and now I have two bulbs just in case. I also don't remember who but I remember somebody saying bad things about the 4200k lamp and at least for veg I'd say it works. I'd be interested to see some plants vegged under the 3100k lamp.

I've also thought about another 315 fixture and not a 630 fixture because of that spectrum shift.

It's a shame there's not an option to get the lec 315 with a remote ballast, if air cooling isn't gonna be an option I don't see why they should force the ballast inside the tent. It doesn't generate much heat, but it does generate heat, and it makes the fixture weigh a lot. That's my one and only gripe so far.



I see some talk about the 860 watt lamps. The guy who talked me into spending $500 on this instead of a cheap 600 watt hps was using the dna lighting bulb/ballast combo in an og hood, showed me his garden which pretty much convinced me that CMH was the way to go. of course, I have come to find out that DNA lighting is out of business. still, air cooled 860 watt CMH garden with co2 (not mine)-

Found cheaper cmh bulbs with higher lumens 41k to be exact. Same 20k life hours you can find in SIMilar spectrum to. You can hang it vertically like how you can witht any hid bulbs which will yield better some of you guys are jokes on everything

I was researching them for an upcoming project but I've read that its not recommended to run them in a cool tube setup. Something about possibly cracking the bulb. Has anyone else read this? I know its been done before its just not recommended.

That 41k is probably at more than 315w right. Either way, it doesn't mean a whole lot. I use a phillips 400w hpi-t for veg which is an mh with nearly the same lumen output as the 315w, somewhat similar spectrum, and a cheap bulb (30 bucks or so) but it's still not quite the same.



epapillon (some people who left phillips and started their own thing) also sells lec 315w fixtures and one for two bulbs. Don't know how they compare in price and performance:

It can be ran bare bulb, horizontal or vertical. You can use any reflector that has a mogul base. Just need to get the proper connector for your reflector. The only problem is that the ballast is 240v only, so you either have to get a transformer or do a 240v run. It's not an option for everyone. Some assembly required.

I've been running HPS thouies vertically with magnetic ballasts and I'm tired of the excess electrical expense and heat. I'm already wired for 240V and I need to upgrade- badly.

Specifics PLEASE, I don't want to pull the trigger on a four figure lamp upgrade and then discover I've made a poor choice.

It's more like a higher quality and more efficient version. The obvious difference being that it's 315w. If you don't replace the bulb for several years it will still put out more light than the 400w does after just a short time. And if you do replace the bulb every year the nearly 100watt savings in electricity will pay for it. I agree the Sun set (and epappilon too probably) are a little pricey but those aren't the only options to run the 315 cmh.

I just thought I'd post this here. $200 for a 240v ballast and bulb, till the 30th of april. After that I'm guessing it'll be around $270 for the ballast and bulb.

Anyone know the LER of these lec fixtures? so we can quantitatively compare it to an hps or diy build in par watts
I know you already know this but for those learning, It is not possible to directly compare efficacy between HID and COB because of complications with reflector losses, spectral distribution, spread, photon angle and of course price. We can compare PPF (bulb emitted photon count/dissipation W) to get a starting point though.

Philips 1000W DE HPS = 2.07 umol/s/dissipation W (41.5% efficient)
Philips 315W CMH 4200K = 1.95 umol/s/dissipation W
