I bought this Dell Inspiron 5720 (17R) laptop about 3 years ago, with Windows 7 home premium installed and a recovery partition but no disk set. Short story, the hard drive crashed. I have a valid, working product key but no operating system to speak of.

II decided to upgrade to Windows 10 (free if you have a valid product key) so I called Dell, they want $20 bucks to send me these disks that I should have gotten three years ago with my purchase to get Windows 7 again to upgrade to Windows 10. So I called Microsoft, They informed me that the manufacturer had to send me recovery disks because it was preinstalled, Microsoft doesn't support it.

So basically I'm being forced to purchase the same Windows 7 just to get the free upgrade to 10.

Can anyone offer advice of what to do? Sorry to sound bitchy but after two hours of being on the phone I'm pretty upset. Thanks for any advice or information!

dell computers are horrible.

without making you feel much worse about said situation already :( i feel for ya.

dont ever upgrade ever until the last possible timeline, windows 7 still works fine and is compatible with just about everything still so for future when they come out with the next windows dont upgrade until the last hot minute.
windows 10 has been having alot of issues because its new, and this shit happens every time new comes out
same thing with iphone updates

did you create a back up so you can recover your computer ?
you can go the illegal route and torrent windows 7 operating system , put it onto disks and insert those into your computer, when it asks for your key you can input that in and it should recognize it as a valid product key

They released 10 way too early. Its not stable since there are a ton of beta programs that are used. I dont see why they think people will pay money to "test" unstable versions of anything? For the money they charge for hard copies of an operating system you'd think they would be fully stable and tested.

Thanks for responding @sunni...

The thing is with keys for manufacturer branded operating systems is that the pirated versions won't accept the keys. I thought about that already, I was hoping someone here might be able to point me to an easier way to get the dell disks without buying them for 20 bucks.

i remember saying that about this version to lol

:D

I loved 98 myself, it was the most secure back in the day

So what do you want to install windows 7 or 10?

If windows 7, try this with your win 7 product key: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

You can do the same with windows 10 I believe here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I have heard you can use any legit windows product key on the windows 10 download (have not confirmed it myself).

The dell drivers page will have all the drivers you need, just enter your service tag or model here: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Products/?app=drivers

Windows 10 is malware garbage..just go to youtube and see what people are saying. If your computer gets the popup to upgrade from win7 or 8..dont do it.Windows 10 deletes the hidden partion to do a factory reset so unless you made a backup of your os or have a disk...u are screwed!! I took me and my wifes back to win 8.1 .My boot to fully loaded takes like 30 seconds not minutes.I've gotten rid of the win10 nag and shutoff the windows updates bugging to download the upgrade.I can mail u want u need to get back to win 7 ..message me :)

I had a nice Toshiba with XP that crashed a while back and I debated spending the money for the disks and a new drive but in the end I was glad I did. A fresh install with proper software/drivers really worked well and allowed me to put off buying a new PC for a couple of years for less than $100.

I have the same laptop but it's the special edition model. Great little machines. They run best on a clean install of windows without all the bloatware anyway. I would just download the legit iso from Microshit, drivers from Dell and run a lean mean fighting machine :bigjoint:

I'd just pay the 20$ than
Annoying but better than buying it for like 300$ retail price

Maybe ask to speak to a supervisor and see if they will discount you even more since you never got the disks in the first place

My husband has windows 10 I fucking hate it I refuse to upgrade I have everything turn off so that it won't auto update either on mine

spend the $20 and get the disks, but your laptop may not have enough horsepower to run 10, mine didn't and runs slow.

The 10 is growing on me. We just got this 27 inch touchscreen and even though I'm not crazy about the layout, I like it pretty good. I love the Win7 too though :)

I may, just really hate to spend another dime on the thing. The hard drive and dvd drive both went out, even going on Ebay was still nearly a hundred bucks.
It always ran a bit slow (1 TB hd) with the maximum memory installed but the hard drive was old school so I went ahead and bumped up from 5400 rpm sata to a 7200 rpm sata drive from hitachi. It got nearly 5 stars in ratings. 83% out of all the reviews (which were in the hundreds) gave it 4, $62 bucks, shipped free.

I'm also considering going with a linux os, I just have no idea which one would be the easiest to learn, since I've never used a Linux before.

My latest was another factory Toshiba that I got about 8 mths ago. It came with Win8, but my intent all along was to upgrade it to10. It's just another learning curve and IMO, Win10 isn't that bad, just another OS in a long line of them over the past 30 years:) I mean, I liked Win2000 and XP, but at some point you have to move on. Adapt and overcome. Never tried Linux. Good Luck with it @roseypeach !!

I found the file online, just got done doing the hashcheck, ALL GOOD. Solved :) in case anyone in the future should need to find it, the link is http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_7-windows_install/how-to-obtain-a-windows-7-iso-file-to-create-an/59ef6586-f881-40b7-9070-e7950e057143. Very helpful folks.

I liked 98 and xp, they were both a lot more secure than today's versions imo. I'm happy, got a working iso that checked out, I'll be all set when my tool kit gets here. Thanks! :)

Nothing bad to say about Linux. Open source before open source was cool haha.

Linux is as easy as point n click like Windows nowdays. It was a whole other beast back in the day, but you cant get viruses/malware phishing etc etc from Linux. Kinda wish I'd have stuck with it.

My biggest concern with switching is how many of my favorite programs will/won't work with it. I remember how complicated it used to be when I first got into the game, programming is not my forte..lol I just want to be able to get my work done (tax acct), edit videos, do some image editing, etc

I personally like 7 better, easier to find what I'm looking for, not nearly as nosey and I'm used to it ;)
you are correct, if you have purchased a valid copy of windows and can prove it, the download is free.

ITA!! nosey nosey nosey! and don't even get me started on Cortana..lol I've had all my drivers backed up to..you guessed it...a backup partition on the dead hard drive. Thanks for the offer, I appreciate that! I think I've got it under control for now but if anything changes I'll let you know :)

@sunni... you are right about Dell being horrible. I downloaded the links they gave me to 'update' my firmware a year ago and it totally screwed everything up. I have no idea how to roll back the BIOS and DVD drive or I would. Since then my hard drive failed and my DVD drive says its not what it's supposed to be. Frustrates the hell out of me..

EDIT: on the DVD drive, not only does it not show as the right one, it stopped working altogether. I'm hoping the new drive will work, if not that's out the window and I'll have to go with an external one.
