Growing outside?

Hey Alaska RUI members how many of you grow outside here in the "great land"? Do you plant directly in the ground? I'm new to outdoor grows and was hoping I could get some more tips, I already started a thread before I explored rui. But I plan on growing half in the ground a half in pots in case bad weather. Any tips are much appreciated.

Nice to see some more Alaskans! What type of plants will you be running? I'd personally use pots, but have seen many people grow in top soil amended with coco and perlite

Yeah we need more Alaskans growers using this site.
I'll be running some bubblegum indica seeds from old school B.A. also some clones from a purple Kush and an unknown strain. I also bought 20 mixed seeds from osba, of which I'll run 3 maybe.

I will be interested to see some progress on this.

What part of the state are you planning on doing this in? How do you plan to cope with some of the larger temperature swings, even in the summer time?

Well down here on the Kenai the temp doesn't get hot, they will be under a plastic GH I'm gonna make out of some plastic I bought and wood I'll scavenge. In there it might get 90 on hot sunny days but most likely on those sunny, not too windy, I'll take them outside for a while.
As for cold spring/fall nights, the only real solution I have thus far is the makeshift GH and hoping the ground stays warm enough overnight, but if I have to the potted ones I'll bring them inside.

I live in Mat Su and have been looking at plans for smaller Hoop Houses using 6 mil Visquene (sp?). I have some concerns mainly about nights where even in the summer time, some nights in the Mat Su it can get cold enough to see your breath in the air. Then again building a smallish Hoop House is only 150 bucks or so, so I may give it a shot. As I can use it for other things if my bud doesn't do to good out there.

What kind of structure are you going to build? Any plans you can share?

Yep some clear summer nights with a breeze coming off the inlet or out of the mnts, can get pretty frigid.

So far I have 2 rolls of 3.5 mil visquene. I figured I wanted the thinnest possible so they get the max light possible. Im gonna plan for regular rectangle walls with a two sided roof.(4×12 probably)
Hopefully I have enough plastic for two green houses. But one will be bigger and one hopefully not too small. But I really want a small GH hut for males, and breeding.

I have also heard there are heat activated openers, that require no electricity. So if you are worried about venting that may be an option there too.

Probably to expensive for me. I just want to be as simple and cost effective as possible while still harvesting a quality crop.

Hoop houses or indoor it
I am going to try a hoop house this summer, out in the Mat Su. From some research it seems I may just be better off growing my plants in buckets, instead of putting them in the ground.

Yeah it's the safe way. I hope my few in the ground will explode though, cause by may I'm gonna have some bushes ready for transplant. I figure I only have to give them a week to veg and adjust then bud them for as long as mother nature lets me.

I may just do that a couple in the ground and the rest in buckets to see how it all goes.
