I'm in the process of building a 4 cob active cooled light, and have been checking out some builds on here to get ideas for mine.


Im planning to test this exact same system out, just on a smaller scale. Being an HPS guy, my room is designed for such and cooler months/winter I rely on my HPS to keep the room at temp with no heaters. I have to justify the power reduction over loss of heat than from running my HPS. If I have to run a heater while using the COB light it defeats the whole purpose. Worst case scenario I have a good, cool running summertime light and can save on my A/C usage and light power consumption.
Nah, man- just insulate the room a bit better and you're gravy.

I use 2 clipon fans to move the warm air off the heatsinks to create some airflow in the tent.
Must say this works pretty good, temperatures in the tent are mostly perfect.

Im building mine with active 12V fans per 36" heatsink. I have yet to run anything since they are unfinished to really be able to see what kind of temps they give off. From what I gather from those who have done them, the heatsink should get about 105-110*F at peak operating temp. I currently run (2) 1k HPS w/ 6" vented hoods for my flower room which is well insulated. I can run my current setup in harsh Michigan winters with no heater while lights are on. Ive maintained temps of 75*F (even with only 1 1000W hps) all winter in sub freezing temps. My small space heater only kicks on when the lights are off during 12/12 and even then it only kicks on for about 2-3 minutes 3-4 times an hour or so. Heating would be my issue more than cooling is. I pull fresh air from outside when my exhaust fans kick on and I vent outside for the exhaust as well. As soon as it hits 75 my exhaust kicks on and expells the heat outdoors and pulls in the cold air from outside. In the summer I have a portable A/C unit I hook up and change around my venting a bit for summer time use. It took a bit to get it all dialed in, but now its a matter of just changing over some ducting which takes all of about 5 minutes to go from heating to cooling the room. If the led fails to give off enough heat in the winter, then my exhaust will never kick on. That means I will have no air exchange in my rooms and I'll be forced to run a heater (which is counter productive to this whole build). Im just looking to save energy with my cob builds...thats about it.
I plan to build (6) 4 COB-cxb3070's with an HLG185H-C1400B running each set of 4. I believe this will be a relatively comparable foot print to (2) 1K HPS. I'm sure the LED COB gurus will chime in if my expectations are too far off.

Red- get yourself a humidity and temperature controller for your tent. It will kick on as humidity climbs in the winter. You could run 2 tents at opposite times and pull the warm air into the tent with lights out and from the tent with light on? Messy control wall.

Thats actually pretty much how I have it set up. My veg room has a passive intake from the flower room and it exhausts into the flower room as well since thats where the main components are for temp/environmental controls are. My veg room runs a 24 hr exhaust/intake cycle from the flower room. If my flower room is in check I know my veg is as well. My concern is having enough heat produced from the heatsinks from the COB's to replenish a comparable amount of heat in the insulated veg/flower rooms as my current air cooled HPS hood setup that utilizes outside temps in my favor.

This is why I rely so heavily on the elements outside & the heat expelled from my hps to save me $$$ throughout the seasons, but still be able to grow year round. Neither of my rooms budge above 75*F or below 70*F in winter. As for summer my room never exceeds 78*F or below 73*F. Every piece of environmental gear is controlled with thermostats except for the exhaust fan in the veg room. That runs 24/7. The main exhaust is on its own thermostat,the a/c is digital thermostat,& the heater has a built in thermostat. All running independently my room is very well dialed in year round. I also have humidifier/dehumidifier which are digitally controlled as well.
I'm trying to round up some averages for heatsink temps to get a better understanding of what I'm getting myself into.
@Netherfly I may have missed it in the thread if you have, but have you taken digital temp reads for your passive heatsinks at full operating temp?

Pff. Nice build. Just finished a 4 cxb on a big ass heatsink, like the ones from heatsink usa an it suuuuux :(. The heatsink heats up like a motherfucker... That shit really got me down. I'm clueless to what to do next...

What temps are you getting from it? Passive or active cooling? What cobs and driver are you running?

4x cxb 3590 3500 on a MW 1400. Passive cooling... I can't say what temp the heatsink is. I can keep my hand on it gently but when I had to get it down I had to wait 30 min not to burn my hands. I guess adding 2 vents won't do shit...

My understanding of the 3' by 5.886" heatsink is that it is just within the threshold of being a passive with our configuration (at least with the cxb3070). Im curious to know what the actual temps are on that heatsink as a passive. I have mine set to run with a fan, but might scrap that if it runs too cool. Whoda thunk the day would come that someone would be concerned about high intensity lights running "too cool" haha.

Idk man.. I had my hopes up with this diy... summer is here, no more A/C etc... now if I were to add 600w of cxb it will be the same as a HPS I terms of heat. I need another plan...

Had you previously run hps or build yours to replace one? If so were they hoods/air cooled? How much cooler would your heatsink run with cooling fans? Lots of factors to consider between the two.

I had 2 runs with HPS but heat and noise are killing me so I swapped to leds. I own an a51 xgs 190, 2 ecosunlite o e 270w and 1 90w and a twilight 90w. Than I saw the cxb diy fever and so much talk about no heat I just ordered some... the thing is all my leds run cooler...

IMHO it's very simple, you wanna run passive? Then invest more.
More COB's running at a lower amperage will give you the efficiency needed to run passive.

There are many ways to super cool a passive fixture. No matter what you need good air flow in the tent/room, so instead of wall fans, you could mount box fans 1 foot off the ceiling with your rope ratchets attached to the box fan. Great warm air flow into the canopy and I doubt that you will every have the fan past low. Just one idea.

Today finished building the moonshine still, prepared the first batch of 50L mash.
It consists of flaked corn, barley, sugar, water and yeast.

From the barrel, through the waterlock, hopefully lots of Co2 will enter the tent the coming 3 weeks
