The far red thread

Ya ice mud, I use it also. He's just saying that you should start the first week or so at 12/12 to get your plants flowering naturally, then switch to far red.
I get it... I'm just doing something different...not to say anyone is right or wrong.. just different. I will keep everyone posted how it goes and if 14/10 works.

I have flowered under 13-11 without far red and it worked on both indica doms and sativa doms...

No the 12/12 at the beginning and end also use 730 nm.

It's about using the plants physiology to accelerate the onset of flower and finishing with the ability to have the plant absorb more energy during the bulk of flower to increase yield, one added benefit that I discovered is it also shortens flower time.

so are you saying 14 on & 10 off?

I've also seen reports of diminished yields from increasing day length.

I tried "adding FR at lamps out" myself and didn't seen any increase in yield from 13.5/10.5 over 12/12. If anything, the yield was slightly less. Perhaps the grow was over a bit sooner, but I think it's difficult to say unless you do this side-by-side.

One grow I ran the 730Nm leds at lights out immediately from the switch to 12/12. Hoping maybe flowering would start sooner, but the plants started stretching like crazy.

I'm on approx day 8 since the change to 14/10, running FR for 2 hours at lights out.. my sativa dom's aren't really stretching but my indica doms are stretching like I've never seen them before... what usually is a few inches between nodes has stretched to almost 8-12" between nodes... crazy stretch on my indica's.

@captainmorgan, what happens when you do 13,5/10,5 all the way through flower? Have you tried it?
Never bothered to try that. Flowering is controlled by the perceived amount of darkness the plant gets. Lengthening the amount of darkness pushes the plant to start or finish faster. By starting at 12/12 with 730 flowering starts faster, I've seen pistils in as fast as 3 days and lengthening darkness at the end pushes it to finish. The longer schedule in the middle of flower is for yield, more energy in equals more plant mass.

@captainmorgan can you also run 12/12 then 5-10 mins far reds @ lites out & have the run finish faster ??
iirc someone was doing this to save power with his far reds & have a extra run a year due to fast finishes ?

I have used @captainmorgan light schedule for my last three grows with great success, It works and works well.
ya me too, ive used the 13.5 10.5 and had excellent results. It does seem like the plants just grow bigger with the longer period.

I run just a few watts of 730nm for 12 mins at lights out.

Im not sure that ive observed a shorter flower time.

Very similar to what i saw with the sin mint cookie that got walloped with far red. It turned out fantastic

If you are doing 2 hours of Far Red at lights off; then in reality you are actually running lights 16hrs on and then only 8 off. I think you will see a delay in the onset of flowering and crazy stretch using this schedule. You see Far Red also influences Shade Avoidance response, so with 2 hours of it and nothing else your plants think they need to stretch like crazy to get into the full sunlight.

Like he said, Capn Morgan has been experimenting with these for a while now, so I tend to think he knows a bit about them.

I personally use mine for 10mins at lights off and maintain 12/12 and I can confirm it takes close to a week off my total time to harvest.

You may have something there. I'm trying to induce some stretch in veg so I have the main lights on 16/8 and the 730 on 20/4. Set that up yesterday after some thought.

Yep I reckon you will see a lot of stretch with that schedule.

On a similar note I've read that how you transition between veg and bloom affects the stretch. Apparently if you just throw the plants straight from 18/6 to 12/12 without any kind of ramping that induces more stretch. I cannot confirm this yet tho.

Well plants do grow in the dark. They use all those sugars and photosynthesis products for respiration and other cellular functions.

Giving them light >700nm might help those processes without triggering the plant into a day cycle.

Are there any safety issues I should worry about?

Why the sock puppet, thought you weren't afraid to speak your mind and all that shit about truth and no one was your intellectual equal in plant biology and lighting. Now your skulking around spreading lies and half truth's like a petty back stabbing little bitch using sock puppets. Thought you had a back bone but apparently not.
