New to growing, wanted to introduce myself and setup

Hey Everyone,

I am new to the forum and new to growing. I am 26 and disabled with a chronic pain/nerve condition so i am hoping to be able to grow my own meds because i am all set with painkillers.

I have ordered all my supplies and am just about ready to start. Just waiting on seeds from Nirvanashop. I had germinated 6 seeds already using rapid rooters but we got a bad snow storm here and we lost power for a few days which left the plants with no light and they all are near dead now.

I am hoping to be able to get 6 ounces or more from this setup each harvest with proper techniques and training. I am trying to decide how many plants would be best for this 2, 3, or 4.

My setup:

T3 TastyLED COB light- 4 3000k 80CRI 29C veros
2X4X5 Vivosun Tent
Foxfarm Ocean forest and Light warrior mix
Foxfarm Nutes (Big bloom, grow, and tiger)
Smartpots 3 Gallon
2 Clip on desk fans for a breeze
1 6 Inch Exhaust fan on the top
PH reader and TDS meter

Everyone here has been incredibly nice and helpful so far and i just wanted to say i really appreciate it.

There is a wealth of info out there and it is enough to discourage you when you first start, or easy to waste money on wrong/insufficient equipment

Welcome Joe,
There is tons of info here. You should do some digging and decide what works best for you. Lots of ways to do things and lots of opinions about what is best.
First let me say I know nothing about COBs. Lots of guys do though and they have a whole section of stuff I don't understand, lol.
I started out almost the same as you, but with HID.
Some things to keep in mind. That soil is organic. That means it has things in it that will provide nutrients. (personally I would add some EWC) for the first 4-6 weeks or so. Adding extra nutes before the plant needs it does no good and will cause you problems down the road.
It's a plant, let it grow. Let the plant tell you what it needs. The nice thing about soil is you have time to correct issues.
TBH I always had def using nutes. I went the organic route and much happier.
Have you grown plants before? Learn to grow it, then learn to grow it well.
The pleasure of smokin meds you grew yourself is well worth the journey you are taking!
Good Luck!

Thanks brother, i appreciate it. Good advice.

I have not grown plants before, but i am reptile guy, so i am used to taking care of something that is extremely temperamental. Especially regarding temps, humidity, diet, sunlight, etc.....

I don't plan on adding any nutes until 4 weeks or so since i am using the nutrient rich ocean forest soil. I will have to look into the EWC.

This will be my first grow, but i am hoping to nail it if i keep doing my research and follow all the advice i have been given.

Thanks! For sure. I am trying to save them but TBH i got these from a local dealer and i was kind of iffy on their quality anyway from the get go.

I am waiting on an order from Nirvana-shop, so i might just start over when i get that batch. Especially because i have 4 strains coming i really want to plant, rather than only the blueberry that i got.

I just hope it arrives fast. I had to send a stupid wire transfer because their credit card option is down. The transfer takes 2 business days :( and it is the weekend so hopefully they ship monday.

I had the same tent. You can do 3 x 3g pots as long as you keep your floor clear. Also make sure to move a lot of air inside the tent.eg one small fan blowing across the canopy and another blowing up their skirts. 2oz per plant should be a very achievable goal and have a plan to keep things orderly (stakes, tomato cages)
Sorry forgot to welcome you on a an amazing journey.

Thanks man. I had intended on doing 3 or 4. If i could do 4 and reach 10 ounces or so, that would be awesome, but it might be a bit cramped. Yup that is exactly how i have my fans set up. One mid range to give a good breeze and one down below shooting upwards.

I have heard of others using the same cob setup getting as much as 12 ounces from 2 plants, that is just insane to me.

Thanks so much, i really appreciate that. I absolutely hate being disabled at 26. I have been dealing with this for like 3 years now and they still can't quite figure out how to fix me. Weed has helped me through it for the pain though, and believe it or not my sanity from being stuck in my house for extended periods of time.

Keep us posted on your grow .... Will sub up.
Thanks bud, i am both excited/nervous. I want this to go well, and have been researching for weeks now. Knowing i have this place though really makes me feel better about it.

Hopefully my seeds will get here quickly!

One question i just thought of if anyone has an answer for me.

I plan on planting them in small solo cups at first, but when they get too big for the solo cups, can i go straight into the 3 gallon pots? Or do i upgrade slowly? I have been reading some conflicting information. Some people say too big of a pot and you can get mold and stuff from the water not absorbing fast enough.

I like the the gradual step up myself better root balls and heat to the roots. others don't like multiple transplants. If you take care of your plants they will tell you what they prefer. It takes time but you'll get it.

Well I usually transplant two times. It also depends on photos vs autos ( I don't grow autos but I read that transplanting autos is counter productive bc of the short finish time) but with photos transplanting several times is better for root development as stated above. The thing is that, it takes to long for the soil to dry proper before the next watering. Root development is probably the most important thing bc if it don't happen below the soil line it sure as hell ain't going happen above.

The world is your oyster when you grow your own meds ....

Look for strains that may help your ailments .... Maybe some CBD heavier strains.
You can also try a couple Autos ( since the meds are for personal use ) , easy way to get growing. Something easy to start with ( to get your feet wet ) maybe " 60 day wonder " or " Short Ryder strains " .... There so many different ones.

Or even a few BAGSEEDS to get your growing experience. I would rather goof up or start up with strains like these to get in the game.

Lurk the forums for what other growers are doing. You are steps ahead by your light choice alone ............

Thanks again man. I got the following coming, but none are autoflower. It felt like cheating lol all are feminized though.

Northern Lights
Aurora
Black Jack
White widow

I was hoping to do 1 seed for each strain. So 4 plants total and do some lps bending to get some more colas off each plant. I don't think I'll do any topping quite yet.

I'm looking forward to the Aurora because it has great Pain and muscle spasm relief. I have fibromyalgia thanks to my nerve condition so I'm always having super tight muscles and spasms everywhere. It blows.

I am so happy I went with cobs. And I got my tasty today and I am blown away by the quality of it. It is a work of art.

One thing to look out for is different strains might need different water/feed requirements, veggies times ........ just a thought.

Do two and scrog them out like this:

I got right at 6 ounces from these two girls, in 24x39 inch space. In 24x48 you should be able to get 6 ounces easy. Its not necessarily the number of plants, but getting a full canopy that's important. 2 plants, three plants, you'll most likely get the same as long as you fill your space and light it up fully.

The exception is if you were to go with a high density SOG type of grow with a hydro setup for fast growth. Dr Who, another poster on here, got incredible results from that.
