Buds losing smell when I begin to cure.

So my method of drying is remove the big fan leaves then hang the whole plant upside down. I don't do a wet trim.. when it's hanging upside and slowly drying it smells amazing the whole time. I dry and sample buds I pull off the branches every 24hrs after 4-5 days to see if it's dry enough to smoke. Once I smoke a nice blunt that doesn't taste like chlorophyll anymore and taste good I usually start trimming. Then throw them into jars and seal the lid. Problem is after 24 hours of them being sealed in a jar I'll notice the sweet danky smell is losing its aroma. I think my problem is that the buds are still pretty moist after I trim and jar them up. But I don't see how that would affect the smell and taste since I'm slowing down the dry process by curing.. I figured I'd see mold first. This run I only put a small amount of my harvest in jars to test it and it did the same thing. My plants are still drying and on day 6. On my last run I had a qp of some stinky danky OG lose its taste and flavor right when i started curing and I think it's due to the same issue of me not letting it dry out enough. I don't wait til the stem snaps I wait til the weed is smokable in a blunt even if it's very moist. What do u guys think?

So I should let them dry for a few more days huh?
I think so.

If you are determined to jar them anyway, you could jar them, but initially leave the lids untightened and slightly askew for a few days so there is an avenue for air to escape slowly, before sealing them.

Good luck.

Well I have been growing a long time and for the best results when it comes to drying your harvest. Trimming all the fan and water leaves so it retracts to the buds nice and tight then cut each stalk and hang. I use a box in a air tight closet and always dark. I dry for 10-14 days until they snap then I cut the buds COMPLETELY off the stalk leaving fat dry nugs put into jars leave in jar for 3-4 days (DO NOT OPEN).This allows any moisture to spread evenly through all the buds so they are reconditioned to a some what supple state. At that time begin opening fluffing every other day for 10-15 mins for 3 weeks for a perfect cure the smell and taste only get better with (TIME). I hope this helps with your process

I hope I don't start a shitstorm but in my humble opinion, MOST of the time people are harvesting too soon which will result in diminished smell after drying. Other factors definitely can diminish the final smell such as genetics of the plant and improper drying and curing, but if you're pulling the plants 2 - 3 weeks too early, you're definitely going to have less 'good' smell and more 'hay' smell regardless of how strong they seem to smell when their still growing.

Do you have pics of the plants on the day of or days before harvest?

I start my cure wetter than most people ....I dry individual branches instead of the whole plant....I do a rough trim before I hang them and put them into paper grocery bags once the stem snaps but doesn't bust in half .....of course I have to give more attention to the buds and occasionally dump them to air them out....but the extra step using paper grocery bags before jars,,,has always given me great results as far as smell and overall quality of the final product .........usually the hay smell becomes an issue when Buds are over dried and or dried to quickly ......harvesting early doesn't help either ......I've seen lots of great smelling weed get ruined in the dry cure by getting over dried ,,,becoming brittle and basically scentless ......IMO curing is more important than growing the bud in the first place .......try starting your cure on a few buds when the theyre wetter than usual on your next harvest ......just remember to burp them often for the first few days .....works great for me ....it's a little more work with one more step ,,, but well worth the effort IMO ....GL

I made the same mistake but only with one big bud and I'm still pissed.

Just let em dry two more days
after the trimming. That would make the difference. If enough moisture is left in the bud it will rot and the first symptom is a wet feeling on the bud followed by browning and loss of trichromes and loss of all good smell and taste permanently. If you look with the 420 tiny scope and all the trichromes have turned dark brown from dank infection it really is a total loss. They should half milk white / half golden amber. Brown indicates rot with you then must discard. Only a scope can tell unless you have massive obvious rot. But even normal looking buds can get minor rot and loss all good taste and most of the potency and turn to dirt crap dank mold crap weed. You could try to press for oil but I doubt a bud with trichrome rot with produce much oil. And that oil with probably taste like shit.
