The Tragically Hip are hoping to get ahead by a few days, partnering with a Canadian medical marijuana company just before it's set to go public.

The Hip are now "significant investors" in Newstrike Resources Ltd. through controlled companies, according to a company news release.

"After much discussion and assessment on our part, we’ve decided that this company – and the many creative people in it – are a perfect fit for The Hip," it read.

The band pointed out that medicinal cannabis has health benefits and is already legal in Canada. It called the federal government's move to legalize recreational marijuana use "common-sense-policy" and "a change for the best."

"The harm wrought by the prohibition of marijuana has been thoroughly researched and documented."

Newstrike is a small company, and only one of 45 licensed medical pot growers under Health Canada, according to the release.

The company is set to go public on Thursday, and will trade under the symbol HIP on the TSX.

CEO Jay Wilgar said in the release he was "proud, humbled and honoured" by the Hip's decision to invest.

"No one knows Canada and Canadians like the members of The Tragically Hip."
— Scott Kelly, Newstrike Resources executive chairman
“The members of The Tragically Hip are known to a generation of Canadians as artists that have never (wavered) in their commitment to quality and integrity," he said. "As investors, they will apply those same principles to Newstrike."

Executive chairman Scott Kelly said the band's involvement will help Newstrike build their brand as the one Canadian consumers will choose once recreational marijuana is legalized.

"No one knows Canada and Canadians like the members of The Tragically Hip."

So aren't these companies saying they lied about their intent of being a medical company just by talking right off the bat about getting ready for the rec market while its still illegal? That's got to be some sort of violation of their security checks.

you certainly would hope that they WOULD TALK ABOUT IT if he indeed tried it..
its just maddening as hell to think they would support a poison industry
and ............let himself be poisoned as well. ffs

I feel like a piece of me just died after reading this. :(
Yes it's hugely disappointing when our cultural icons join the wrong side. All in the name of making more money off the sick or not sick.
When the TPB's joined one of the LP's I was totally disgusted. Imagine turning on the very people who made you what you are.......I was in conversation with their team at the time and told them so.

likely they just don't know (the barrel was loaded ;) )
the mainstream doesn't see the corrupt greedy LPs as that. they only see legal marijuana, and that these guys will supply it.

can't really blame most for supporting it/them.
why we need to be as vocal as possible.. anytime someone mentions legal marijuana; i'm quick to chime in about big marijuana and the monopoly they're trying to create. (even to ones i don't freely share my marijuana use with)

i think the only big(ish) marijuana one i'm behind is chongs choice.. i'd not buy it (i don't need to) but i respect him and his company mainly for how he's stood up for it for decades.. IMO he's one who deserves to prosper now.
