I'm not going to say that straight clay pellets won't work, but if you read through all 450+ pages here there hasn't been a successful attempt. You can use it in your rez area but Hydroton just doesn't wick up water. You need some sort of wicking action in your medium to make a hempy work. As far as growing autos in hempy you should check out @ISK grow journals. He has several rounds with autos using 2 liter pop bottles. Which leads straight into your tub thoughts. That is way to big for what you want to do. Heres a shot of a tub grow I did with a smaller tub with 2 plants if your not looking for this kind of growth you need to use a smaller container.

View attachment 3958820

You don't need a large container to get a lot of growth. And use something other than hydroton as your medium.
no disrespect but my 1st gen of grows was DWC then Hempy w Hydroton and have never looked back and it DOES work fine and I find alot more use hydroton. I got pics. I just happened to be beginning another hempy grow and seen this lol

The real reason why I got on here today was because I'm getting ready for another hempy grow and I wanted to know what you guys thought about instead of using drain saucers wouldn't it make sense for my grow in a 4 x 4 tent just to get a 4 x 4 flood drain table for $100 on Amazon? let it drain to the front and drain it off that way in one shot instead of six or more individual saucers just seems to me it would be less work with one 4 x 4 floor drain table but sometimes we all know hypothetically how things sound like less work that turned out to be more in the end.

I already found myself making a rookie mistake with the pockets I chose shitty plastic 3 gallon bucket's too late to transplant now all I can do is make sure the six gorilla glue's I got are going into 5 gallon solid sick buckets for just a couple bucks more that will last many grows over and the best part is I don't have the life proof them

Yea, flood table best idea..

Are you in a 4x4? I think you're going to run out of room unless this is just your veg space..

This girl is a beast.. (For me at least).. Giving her 900 ppm Floranova veg. About ten days since the flip. Not too much stretch on her. I have no idea what is going on downstairs.. It's a Jungle down there..

Looks good sicko....question about the green crack...20-30 yrs ago, I use to be a big fan of sativa dominant plants, but the older I get the more I appreciate a well balanced indica with huge character...Right now, my favorite to smoke is Incredible Bulk (not necessarily to grow it)...but for me the buzz FITS....I find many sativa strains now to be a bit racy and even paranoia inducing...what type of high does that green crack have...I have not grown any..I DID smoke some, but could immediately tell, it was not grown well...That made that experience not count...
comment on the table for a drain tray, sure it works well...I use to just use a 2 by 4 frame with 6mil plastic in it...cheap and disposable...toss it out and put a new pc in....BUT, you constantly have standing water...I now drain to a single pan...if I am watering heavy, I put a pump into it with a hose to a bucket...If u do use a large table tray, try to angle it slightly (put it on pc of plywood or similar)..water will drain to one end so u can pump it out...I also covered mine with a sheet of foiled foam board to keep the light off it....cut hole for each pot...remember, fertile water with a light on it, will quickly get green on you....pic from early veg last crop...shows drain sys to single small pan...I find it much more manageable...Also, it makes me elevate the buckets a little so they will drain properly...when they are elevated, you can put a small hole in the lower side of a bucket with a rubber stopper...I find that is PERFECT to collect a small sample of water to make sure the pH and nute levels are good...IMG-6fa2f1c4-7a9f-4530-9250-df33e6d6ecc2.png

Ya every time I take off more than I can chew and then almost choke to death I can tell you some stories. Considering I have Ankylosing Spodylitis (AS & in Illinois from los angeles) there truly crazy (ever see that movie Gummo?).
I read about things like Cal mag deficiency while I'm taking a shit or I read about mainlining a plant while I'm driving I'm hard-core and I can't help it. Is there a rehabilitation place for this kind of thing?

Anyway yeah I think the tray is a good idea I never seriously considered it until recently and for $100 it's pretty good I just wish I would've thought of the wet vac idea sooner even though I remember reading it I just never used the wet vac for liquids but I recently figured out that my little 3 gal handheld vac is perfect.
You are correct I am definitely out of space in fact I'm working on setting up my 2x2 as we speak ( I realize we're not really speaking per se lol) but even with that I got a problem I do this to myself every time luckily I have my girlfriends nephew who is a young kid who wants to learn and I'm teaching him and I already gave him 4 plants but I'll figure something out I always do my problem is not wasting anymore damn Hydroton, & Coco buckets.

I also want to give a big shout out to the Dude Grows Show Scotty and the dude and the grow guru those guys have been a beacon of help and a compass of what's normal when you live on planet Gummo.

They have a good free service but also if you kick them a few bucks and I happen to think all the information they gave me was worth it that's why I was a paid member for a while but due to my financial situation that can be difficult these days but well worth it those guys are great. Anyone that thinks otherwise just doesn't get it and we all know that this industry unfortunately has a handful of people that just don't get it

Cpl pics day 15 of flower...full crop pic and single plant pic...Since these are seed plants (other than my (1) pet White Widow), I have no idea yet, which will be the best...its always fun to watch some unknowns do their thing...My second least favorite plant in late veg, is now looking as one of the best possibilities when finished....it was a VERY BUSY plant on the inside...it was a tangled mess of branching on the inside...It required a lollipopping just about 2/3 of the way up the plant from the bottom, to clean it up...since then, its really looking sweet for this stage of the game...wouldnt be the 1st time a plant you really had little hopes for ended up the best one, AND just the opposite too....I always say, the seed game is just like playing lottery tickets....Sooner or later, you hit a winner...I mentioned somewhere earlier, these 5 Bomb seeds that I am ultimately am growing out, were the best of 17 seeds to start....20170913_190013.jpg 20170913_190024.jpg

Yea, I do it quite often also.. I pack my tent too full then end up giving away plants or chopping them...

Ya. Maybe I still don't have as much confidence in my growers skills I think it's just in case I lose a few plus I definitely don't mind giving us a few around here that can be a problem though. It's definitely interesting to see how guys do a grow differently even in the same style of grow like hempy.
I was looking at the guy above this post and I noticed the diameter of the PVC pipe and the fact that it's open to the world I don't see any advantage of having it that wide. The plumbing to get run off looks like a real pain in the ass but considering his room size I'm not sure what I would've ended up doing with that but it's only six plants so I hand pump like I got or a lot better than that my 3 gal wet vac. I have used so many different saucers the black ones from the dollar store, the metal ones, white ones from Walmart (there actually dish washing tote) that are much better because they're a little taller and shorter take up less room in a tent but I should've remembered what guys were saying early on a wet vac is much easier but today that 4 x 4 tray flat tray should be here.

Question Hempy Growers.

This is my second hempy run and just like my first as you can tell from the pictures above I have a half inch PVC pipe perfectly big enough to bottom feed, but
the thing that bothered me from my last run To the guys that have bottom fed once the roots hit bottom Never nute from the top? and if you do do you stay in the middle or do you go off to the sides otherwise you just get moist Coco in the middle and dry Coco around the sides and I can't imagine that being good even though it worked for me last time.

Also my 4 x 4 flood tray hasn't showed up from Amazon through FEDEX out of the thousands of things I've ordered unfortunately this is the one thing that maybe somebody lost or I got jacked the problem is FEDEX yesterday was acting awfully suspicious asking all sorts of questions I never had that before Concerned because I am in a prohibition state even though I was born and bred in Los Angeles for 35 years sux.

Pretty sure ur talking about my Hempy bucket...I dont run coco..tried it once and hated it...stays WAY to wet for my liking...I DO top water till I am sure the roots are in the rez (YOU KNOW), then just water down the vertical tube I have attached on the inside of the bucket...my bottom is 2 inches of expanded grow rock with an air stone right in the middle of that...I run a mix of 4:1 perlite:vermiculite...the ONLY reason I use any vermiculite cause it hold a little more moisture when I first transplant...It helps the roots set faster...straight perlite a little dry unless u water more frequently....once the roots do hit bottom, I dont need the moisture higher in the medium anymore..the roots are in the rez drinking all they want....your Coco would be like the vermiculite I use for moisture retention...but just like ANY HEMPY bucket, once the roots bottom out, there really is no need to keep top watering..you have to flush regularly too, cause any medium will filter, and hold nutes out of your water mix...eventually making u have to flush...check the ppm of the 1st run off that comes out when u flush, and it will be HIGH. Its dragging those unused nutes down and out...anyways, I can avoid any flushing by only watering down my water tube..it goes right down into the growrock with an angle cut on the end of it...Think of the medium like the hydroton in a DWC net pot AFTER your roots are in the water...no need to top water anymore and that hydroton then is only serving as an anchor for the plant...the roots in the rez are doing the work...same as my hempy...attached a crude pic of my bucket design....another pic of my white widow from the last crop about 10-14 days before harvest (no exactly sure), but was watered down the tube only after the roots bottomed out...medium basically dry, but had ROPE like main roots passing thru it down to the bottom where there is a tangled mass of roots ALL OVER AND IN the grow rock....as u can see, it drank and fed JUST FINE out of the rez only...NO WORRIES about a dry upper medium in a hempy bucket...PLUS It eliminated any flushing..YTIMG-ce6a64ce-41df-44ac-b709-4147b225aaba.png 20170727_024626.jpg

Tonight was a water night and I had a close look at these Bomb genetics to gain some early information...I have (4) THC bomb fems and (1) Bubble Bomb fem...I also have a THC Bomb reg female, flowering in a solo Hempy cup...she was THE BEST of 10 regulars, 6 of which were female, and the only one I kept from all the regs...
(2) of my THC Bombs are the Indica phenos and the other (2) are the sativa phenos....all 4 were the BEST LOOKING from the fems I started and ended up keeping to grow out...I know NOTHING of the details of this strain....I read a post where some one called Bomb seeds about the lineage of these (which was not shared), but apparently a comment was made about being very lucky if he found a particular Sativa pheno....not a huge help, but my more advanced sativa pheno plant, is getting NICE early resins, and is setting up a pretty profile...So maybe there is something to that sativa pheno...neither of the THC Bomb indica pheno types have resin formation even close to the sativa, but these pics are only from day 17....The Bubble Bomb (side view pic), is also setting up for a pretty profile and has some advanced early resins too...She has been a very pretty plant right from the start....maybe someone can comment on their THC Bomb pheno type experience....regards, YT

I'm moving towards the idea that filling the res through the PVC might be best. Here is why.

I noticed my plant often looked droopy.. Coco/perlite. I was giving her a gallon per day of nuts which filled the res and overflowed a little. A few days ago I wanted to see how long I could go without watering before she looked dried out. To my surprise on day 2 she looked really happy. The leaves were all praying.

At day 2.5 I swiched my nutes to flower and gave her a gallon from the top and she soon looked really droppy agai. Now it's been 24 hours and she look ok again. I'm going to gently stick some pvs down into the res and water that way to see how things go. My guess is that the coco is holding too much moisture.

here I am 2 weeks since the flip. I still can't get over how thick the trunk is.

Someone at was trying to describe this bucket you drew at a party last night. I could not visualise it. But I can see it now, thanks.

I would just feel tempted to pull out he air stone and daisy chain the buckets with a 1400L/h aquarium pump. Maybe add a little sump to filter out particles in the water and to drain from. At which point it is basically recirculating hydro with modified active earth boxes.

Indeed 747, I have seen that many times...Coco is VERY, VERY wet mix...if I WERE TO USE IT (and I wont), I would cut it with perlite as much as I do with vermiculite...80 %perlite, 20%vermiculite (coco in your case).....Do u have ALL PERLITE for the base of your container?...a #3 (or even #4) perlite is good...I choose to use hydroton..this time I have an similar item..it expanded slate grow rock...basically the same thing...I like that the rez area CHUNKY..it allows my air stones to work more efficiently and spreads the bubbles better...The air stone is NOT ESSENTIAL, but anytime there is standing water, it helps a bunch...BUT, even without a air stone, Your rez area needs to have, at minimum, straight perlite...with hempy, they principle is that the water is used fast enuf to draw in air to the root mass...But WITH the stone, it bubbles away soon as u top the rez off...roots will seek out the water source...thats why EVERYONE doing hempy comments on explosive growth rate when the roots bottom out...when they do, IT DOES NOT MATTER anymore if the upper medium is wet...SAME AS a net pot in a DWC system...it anchors the plant and all the root activity is IN THE REZ....Roots HATE too wet....Thats why a highly oxygenated rez is critical with DWC. Otherwise they rot...The roots DONT CARE if they are passing thru the basically dry medium, as long as the source in the rez is good...I get pencil thick roots in my dry medium coming off the plants...they grow thick because the ends of them ARE IN THE REZ, not because of a wet or damp medium....So, once my roots are bottomed out, I water the rez only (thru my tubes)...it save you from that wilting, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, from any flushing...Once root bottom out, do one more top water with a super weak mix thru the top to insure there is no residual buildup, then water the rez only....Y.T.
