Adding deep & far reds to Quantum Board build

They want to DMX control some beneficial spectra to existing 80% 3000k QB’s but these multi spec sound QBs kinda cool if they’re spitting out a ton of the right light.
I actually like the idea of a DMX controlled unit with a bunch of preset scenes that could be timed to run a dawn til dusk program, or totally programmable to by the end user.

Which brings me full circle to my query as to how much royal blue, deep & far red do I add to 4x & 6x QB304 fixtures. Also and recs for drivers would be awesome too. Thanks!
QB are available in different Kelvin options - and if boards are VF matched as a set you could run a rig with a full mixed option or even a 3000k/3500k ( diagonal from each other ) .
I am currently running a 3000k and 3500k grow -

3000k main rig - 3500k as supplemental

These are on their last legs ( 2 weeks or less til harvest ) - no added deep red on this last couple weeks .... Just full light. Even though ,I grow for personal use only and don't need 20 plants of one strain , I prefer variety and grow pairs perpetually ( 2 week runs between ) .....

My next experiment will be a 3000k / 4000k grow mix -

That`s 3W epistar full-spectrum chip ~ 1800K // 12 in row / 9 paralell (@30W)

if you drive them < 100mA - they are pretty efficient like all chips
@ ~ 13% of max. load.(700mA)
can cost you something like 1,30US$ / W

Hey M, do you have a link on that or any more info, like parmap? Ive been interested in using this spectrum for supplemental for some time. Or growlog w these?

If you want the best possible efficiency, there is no way around and you have to use either Cree's or Osram LED's. These would be either Cree XP-E HE, 660nm, top bin (C01) or Osram Oslon SSL120, 657nm, top bin (horticulture or S3S4), 57% effiency at 350mA.
You can already find the Cree top bins for $2...(that's according to the seller
XPEEPR-L1-P3-29-C and means 425mW@350mA, 655-665nm)
They are mounted to 20mm stars but the seller recently also had strips with 12 diodes (4S3P), 8,4-10v/350-1000mA.

This is definitely more of what I’m looking for. Question is how many photo reds and how many royal blues do I use with a 1-3w star? 6 red vs 3 blue?

I would use 3:1 or 4:1 deepred/blue ... if I would use this combi. I would rather mix coolwhite and deepred.
Yo Randomblame, thank you!
6500k with 3000k qb’s? At what ratio?

Also, 3 or 4 to 1 Red to blue, but what ratio from 3000k QB to deep Red? What drivers would you use?

Thanks so much. Really appreciate your insight

I would agree for Bloom, our boards Star or Strip use XPG-3 Royal blue(600mw) these have greater photon performance than XPE-2 Royal Blue
Cheers

I’ve heard good things about cutter. Will definitely check you out when I figure what I’m actually doing. Thank you.

Trying to build a pre-programmed, programmable DMX app controlled hybrid that will excel in both veg and bloom.

Sounds interesting, mate.
Have a look at Meanwell's HLG-xxxH-Cxxx "D2" series. These drivers has a build-in programmable digital timer/dimmer and could be very useful for a project like yours.

That depends on whether you want to use it as a basic lighting or just as an "adjusting screw" to enhence the spectrum. As spectrum enhancement I would add 5% 420-440nm and 10% 660-680nm, which completes the spectrum at both ends. Believe it or not a bit of purple light can have a visible effect on the resin/terpene formation.

As base light you could add up-to 50% or more deepred to a qboard and still have enough blue to get compact growth but it would be really expensive to use such an amount of additional mono's. The best photored XP-E's are ~57% efficient@350mA which is in the same range as a qboard but it costs you much more to build a board that generates as much light as a quantum board.

So in my opinion mono's are only useful to tweak and optimize the spectrum. But what I really like is a 50:50 mix of different warmwhite CRI's to get a good(if not the best) red : deep red : far-red ratio that optimally covers the range of 590-730nm.
Vegging with 3k/CRI80 and flowering with additional 3k/CRI90.

BTW,
To just add coolwhite to Quantumboards Samsungs H- or Q-Series strips in 1ft length fits perfect and use the same(F-) or better diodes(Q-Series).

There is nothing more economical than the Samsung F-Series and Bridgelux EB Gen 2 strips.
You cannot manufacture a strip at a lower cost than the retail price of these strips.
What is needed is some deep red strips to complement these strips.

The most economical PCB panel is 16" x 22" so the strips should be 22" and they will match the length of the BXEB-L0560Z. I would make them thinner than the EB strips. The Samsung strips fit in many off the shelf aluminum profile extrusions where the EB do not.

Each strip would have about 20 LEDs where the forward voltage matches two of the BXEB-L0560Z in series.
The deep blue strips would need to have about 16 LEDs to match the red forward voltage.

I find the OSRAM Olson SSL 150s deep red to be the best deep red LED today. The 150 has better uniformity over the SSL 120 and 80s. The Lumiled Color C line (same as Sun Plus 20) ahve a great view angle for uniformity as well but the OSRAM are cheaper and easier to re-work. The Color C are too small to work with.

Cree XP-3G is the best deep blue. The Cree deep red is pretty good too.
You can make a dual footprint on the PCB that will accommodate both Cree XP and OSRAM Olson.

Deep blue is not really needed when white LEDs are being used.

As far as the ratio of white to red, Cree used 144 White XP-3G 4000K and 48 deep red to match the spectrum and power of a Gavita Pro HPS 1000W with a Philips Bulb. So the WR ratio would be 3:1.

The EB of F strips are much lower powered than the Cree and OSRAM LEDs. So there would be no need to run them harder than 350 ma. At 1" spacing thermal management may not be required. You could add an adjustable CCR for simple current regulation nullifying the need for matching forward voltages.

The 3000K to 5700K ratios would be best handled by using two boards, one of each and tune the CCT by regulating the current in each strip separately. Take a look at the Bridgelux Vesta Tunable White Linear stgrips. Each strip has a row of 5000K and 2750K. I do like running them with just the 1750K and not using the 5000K row at all. I do not believe they were intended to be used with both rows running at max current. The problem with with both rows running at max is they get too hot.

I do not see any full spectrum LEDs on epistar.com.tw
sorry - this is chinise epistar - never found any professional datasheet of these chips

you find this chip everywhere on alibaba and aliexpress

eg.
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/gr...ml?spm=2114.10010108.100008.24.4cbe57892u537H
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/5pcs-50W-high-power-led-Lamp-plant-grow-light-full-spectrum-400-840nm-EPILEDS-Chip-32/439311_32847416275.html?spm=2114.12010612.0.0.e6846f11UxIud

sometimes they are "called" epileds
but on epileds.com.tw - happens the same

as we know the only difference to other epistar white chips is the red phosphor
mix into the layer. LES gets relativly hot and lumens output @ max. current is < 80lm/w

eg. epistar smd5730 coolwhite can reach 110lm/w
for the low lumens output most people think, that there is nothing interesting to be dicussed here on riu about the "cheap chinise crap" cobs.

!...but the incredible low prices for these chips give the possibility to competition.

if you compare prices you will pay eg. 45$ for 1 x CREEcxb3590 / 2700K 80CRI typ 11908
driving out 50w /1450mA / 170lm/w it will be very efficient
driving out 100w /2700mA / 138lm/w it will lose ~23% light efficiency

for 45$ i can buy chinise crap chips 16 x 50w / 1500-1800K @ 1450 max. current / 80lm/w
and drive them @ 3,1w / 90mA / ~183lm/w
widely spreaded with a much better heat management.

i estimate ~23% light efficiency gain with 50% load also for these cheap cob chips
specially very warmwhite (1800K ) chips can profit by low current efficiency
but in the whole internet you won`t find any datasheets or further information

3 x 100W cob full spectrum 1800K @ 10w :shock:......are impresive :roll::cool::cool:
