1 plant under led question..?

I grew under led for 5 years. I'm betting if I got a 200w led panel which barely even covered 3ftx3ft and grew in coco, in a 5 gallon pot, in a 3ft tent I could still grow a big plant. I want to reduce my electric use and I don't enjoy growing under hps like I did with led.

I'm going to buy some leds this week. There are some at my local hydro shop that I'm interested in. I like the idea that if it brakes I can just go down the road and it gets fixed.
Best advice I can give is don't rush into anything, I've seen a lot of buyer remorse on this forum. I wouldn't be to concerned about buying local, good LED lights rarely fail and if they do it's usually just a matter of slapping in a new driver. I've seen a light here that is a great fit for a 3x3, but can't remember what it was. :wall:
Anyone?

I would give serious consideration to the light @Moflow posted, the Scope strip light from diyleduk, it's high quality construction with Samsung LM301B diodes and Meanwell driver. Strips give the best coverage and can be run within inches of the canopy, great for growing trees. ;-)
Like many of us, I'm a DIY guy so I made my own strip light.

FWIW, you might make those 5 gallon pots coco/perlite hempy buckets and reduce watering to every other day.

My question is...

'If I were to grow 1 plant in each tent under led, Does it matter as much if the light doesn't cover the sides or corners very well?' I mean with the plant getting all the light to itself, surely it would be getting enough light to thrive and naturally spread the energy through the whole plant.

However, If I were growing 4 smaller plants in the same area under same led, surely it would affect the plants more just having ,most of the light firing down the middle? So the corners where the plants are aren't getting much light, also 4 plants are fighting for all the light in the middle.

That's all I want answering please.
Parts of a plant are pretty selfish in my experience. If one branch gets light and the other one doesn't, the plant doesn't redistribute that energy fairly at all. I'm sure some energy is distributed (see source / sink theory).* Whatever gets lots of light will grow well and whatever doesn't won't. They don't think "oh fuck, only 30% of me is getting 500 ppf". If 10% of it gets light and the rest doesnt, that 10% will absolutely thrive and the rest will die. It would not matter if there were 1 or 500 plants in there. It's just like machine and the parts with more light grow faster and better, except this machine has been fine tuned for millions of years by nature

* for example I heard in a podcast with a researcher that if a leaf sees <200µmol it became a sink rather than a source of energy
Obviously the branches which get poor light are helped by the tops receiving the light. It just won't amount to much (Larf, popcorn buds).

Thanks, but I'm not in the USA. I'm in contact with my local hydro shop about these... This isn't my local hydro shop though, just the link to the lights. Not sure if my local shop only has the gen 1, not the gen 2.

Thank you. I have asked this question in 2 threads and you are the 1st to answer it. That makes sense to me. Like the leaves at the bottom of the plant start falling off when they get no light, so I guess less light will have some kind of negative effect.

A 400w hps grows nice buds at the edges of my 3ft x 3ft tent and their par is not good, especially in the corners.
People been growing for years with "low PAR" and it grew damn fine award winning bud... with 500-700 ppfd you will rock it and get a totally satisfying result
In Europe 600W SE HPS is more standard in those sizes, american tradition is 1000W DE hung higher. (edit: well, not in a 3x3, slightly bigger)
I mean, it was a time people wondered why MH doesn't hit HPS yields watt for watt  Duh, MH puts just out way less light than HPS
1000 PPFD without CO2 is a fad. It's nice to have the option but I have seen plenty of plants that don't like it so much, or it changes the morphology in a undesirable way
I like what a guy called LostLeaf says: if you're hitting your plants with 1000 PPFD most of them are done photosynthesizing after like 9 or 10 hours.

And to add something to the "Selfishness". If you take a plant and prune some of the big fan leaves, you'll notice that the shoots which are supported by those leaves you removed will grow very poorly compared to the ones where you didn't remove the leaf. Even if they are right next to it. I see every shoot as a new iteration of the same plant, a recursive thing. It just grows itself in itself in itself, as much as it can. All the shoots of the plant appear to compete against each other, looking for light. Not by choice, it's just what happens. If the left shoot gets 50µmol/s more than the right shoot, the left shoot always wins over time.

So yes light spread and light diffusion are king. It's better to have 600µmol/s everywhere than 1000 in the middle and 300 at the edges. This is what you can achieve to great success with DIY methods. But to be honest, the light spread of most commercial modern LEDs should be an improvement over single point sources of light such as HPS.

When I used single point light sources, I would always see the leaves at the edge pointing inwards toward the light. With diffuse light sources the leaves are always pointing up. I see this as a sign that every part of the canopy gets adequate lighting. The quality of the tops is high, and larf is reduced. (More light can reach more spots because of the diffusion)

DIYleduk & Invisible Sun are some local options. Strange name, I think an invisible sun would give 0 ppfd
I don't mind paying a bit extra for local warranty. I can't help it, but get anxious because of ptsd. I just worry about shit all the time. If I knew in the back of my head that I can drive my broken led 10 minutes down the road to get it fixed, to me that's worth the extra money for the led. These leds are like 2 1/2 jars of my many jars lol Plus 2.7 umol is highly respectable.

£1000 for a 300w led. Bit heavy innit?
Yeah, Amare UK is expensive. Amare USA on the otherhand give tremendous deals.
Damn.
Well, i peeked at your link o the lights the grow store sells. If you're dead set on buying from the grow store then id say you got pretty lucky. Many stores sell cheap led or expensive but not nearly the best for your money.
Your store sells San-Light. Which is a respected name in led, comprised of quality components & a nice design. German too, no?
I would push them to get you a few 245w, V2 units that boast about 2.7 umol/j, so said. Probably board efficiency & could expect to see 2.3 in the garden. Especially lensed.
They are priced to compete with other leds in that quality range @ around 2+$/w. Not the end of the world.
Grab them new San-Lights yo!
Not to bad at all & you could prob remove the lenses/optics if so desired.
If stuck on Grow-Store purchasing, those are pretty damn decent.

Goodluck!
I just spoke with the hydro shop and he said they have sanlight version 1 in and his boss said they want to sell them 1st, but he ain't going to be knocking much off the price of version 1 at any point, but he will see if there is a possibility he can order version 2 leds if I pay a deposit. He did say they are about £600, but I can get 10% off. So version 1 would cost me £413.96 each and version 2 - £540 each. I'm going there tmrw for root stimulator, so I'll sort it then I hope.

Get the version 2 but try not to pay more then 2.40/w. Wicked Expensive but you'll have quality. Buying shitty LED only makes one think they all suck.
If you're used to growing under white leds only then you'll be in for a pleasant suprise when you see what a properly enhanced spectrum does for your plants.
Why Grow-Store stuck if you don't mind my asking?

Sorry, I don't get the question.
Why are you determined to purchase an led light from there rather then the company or open your possibilities by purchasing from anywhere on-line or direct to manufacture?
Any UK available lighting? There's some decent, more affordable options.
Although, i like Those San-Lights too!!!

2 different websites have them buy 4 at £482.95 each. I'm thinking about moving a 5th tent into my main grow room, but ditching 2 of my 7 tents. Buy 5 leds, plenty to keep that room warm during the winter, without it being too hot in the summer. I want to do less than what I have been.

Bought this a few years ago, this is my 500$ Advanced Led DS200 [185 watts] Didn't think it could cover 3'x3' .. I still don't think it will.. this is it with 18"x24" scrog screen.. I figured it cost enough that I needed to keep the light on the plant.. Continuing my igloo coolers adventure on the next page of that thread.. Off topic of course..

If it breaks I can drive down the road and get it fixed. That's pretty much it. I like the peace of mind.

£2414.75 for 5 if they can price match. I'll be using 1.225 kw/h, instead of 7 ballasts 3.080 per kw/h. That's going to be a noticeable reduction on my electric bill. My electric is £18 ish per day. It will be about £7 per day I hope.
