Building my own DWC

Do you think it would be easier on me to have 8 individual 3 gallon buckets or get a Rubbermaid tub and have one large reservoir with 8 net pots suspended by lid

it would definitely be easier in one tub, less airlines and airpumps, less buckets to clean, one res to control temps and to flush.

What size reservoir should I use for 8 plants. I also need to know what size air pump and size/amount of airstones for rolling boil

I have 2 2*4 t5 8 bulb 436 Watt fixtures for flower and 1 of the same kind of fixture for vegging. These fixtures were free so I figured I'd use what I got for now.

under 436w 2x2.5 tote would be good. if you have no height restriction, get it 12" deep. would require a good airpump with 6-8 airstones

Do you cut holes into the original lid for net pots or do you construct so other type of lid for the cooler

Read FloGrow's thread he has one that he just started C99 & Pure Gooey.

We use insulated attic board about 2-4" thick and cut holes (just insulation board) and drop net cups in. keeps temps perfect, no light etc. I am using team sport jugs that you see at sports games 5GA capacity i removed the lid and placed a board over the top and placed net cup in easy to lift off secure no light issues.

Cooler size is dependent upon how many plants your talking with 8 plants I would run 2 large coolers like flo grow is.

Have to agree with using a cooler as your reservoir. I have used the tubs from Walmart and they work. The problem is, after a few months under the lights they tend to weaken and bow. This is alarming when you consider there is 20 gallons of "water" in there. The way around the issue is to use two tubs (one inside the other) to add structural integrity to it. When I built my ebb and flow system, a cooler made perfect sense for the reservoir. Would not use anything else at this point.

Used bubble buckets as an experiment once. They work very well, but definitely more "invasive" with all the lines required.

How often would I need to change the Res water. Does it vary form vegging to flowering

I change mine every 7-10 days just because I like clean.. it doesnt change from vegging to flower you should still clean your res weekly. After you get some grows under your belt you will be more familiar with everything and then decide when you want to change your own reservoir. And a cooler is a good idea for a guy starting out or anyone for that matter.. Your reservoir temps will stay 65-68 degrees as they should be and you will avoid things like root rot slime in your reservoirs..

How do you easily remove twenty gal of water cause 160lbs of water is awfully heavy. And while your removing water what do you do with the plants
