I have a thread you might like...lemme dig it up

Here it is

https://www.rollitup.org/do-yourself/58871-2-minute-cheap-easy-carbon.html

I don't have to worry about smell right now, but this thing looks like the shit!
A word of warning to anyone who wants to try this method: you need a HIGH output fan for it to work.

Here's what I did:
- bought a 188 cfm booster 6" fan (for around $45)
- bought a high flow cotton air filter like the one in the link above at an auto shop ($25)
- bought activated carbon at a pet shop ($7)
- bought a 6"-to-4" duct to connect the fan and filter ($7)
- followed all the directions in the link to a T

Conclusion: the fan is not nearly strong enough to push air through that filter!! Instead, the airflow reverses direction, which is bad news, of course.

I'm currently testing plan B: whether it can work the other way around, having the filter in the box, and the booster fan pull air out. I think that *might* work, but I'm not too sure about the laws of physics to know if that's possible given that plan A didn't work...

Anyway, there's still a lot to rescue from all this. I got a pretty cool fan and I got my hands dirty with activated carbon, LITERALLY (that stuff makes your hands black!). And I learned a lot about fans and filters and carbon in the process.

I'll update if plan B works, feel free to post any ideas...

Peace,

homer371

p.s. No offense to Meta for linking to MalteseGrower's thread. The whole idea is actually very cool, but you do need an incredibly strong fan to push air out of those car filters.

ok i'm in a better mood, sorry if i came off angry before. i *think* plan B is working, but i have one concern.... if anyone knows about carbon filters, please let me know if i should be concerned or not...

right now the air has the following flow:
- in the box --> car filter --> activated carbon sitting in the net bag inside the filter --> booster fan --> out through the roof of the box

is it a bad idea that the "net bag" where the carbon sits is the only thing between the booster fan and the outside air? like, will that end up sending a bunch of carbon dust out? cause i do smell some charcoaly scent when i turn it on. i haven't put my ladies inside yet, but sunday if all goes smoothly.

thanks for any and all replies, i truly appreciate the input.

I feel bad that I led you to some bad information. Your pictures have me more confused that your description. Are you sucking air out now, and is it passing through the filter and charcoal in the process?

P.S.-I'm gonna go smash my big toe with a hammer, so no need to call the goons on me!

no dude!!!! don't feel bad, seriously.

i just spent an hour reading and i realized my problem is the "duct/booster fan". it only pushes 188cfm in open air, but as soon as there is pressure it gets fuxed. the hydro store guy should've warned me about that when i explained my setup.

so i'm blaming hydro store guy, not MalteseGrower, and certainly not you meta!!

and yeah, i set it up to suck air out now, the only problem is that air is going through the car filter first and then the carbon, which doesn't make sense to me. i think i'm going to remove the car filter and just wrap some carbon around the intake of the duct fan... that should work just as well.

if that plan doesn't work, i might use the 6" booster/duct fan 188cfm for intake. maybe... we'll see, lol.

out for the night homie, but if you have any other ideas post away!

Well, if it's working and the smell is reduced, then cool? If anything, i'm reimburse you for the air filter, just shoot me a PM.

meta, that's mighty kind of you to offer, but i wouldn't dream of it! i'm sure i'll find a use for that filter, or i'll sell it on craigslist or something, so no worries!

good news on the box building front... i pretty much finished setting it up and put the ladies in. i'm using the true-air as the exhaust and still haven't quite figured out intake yet but i'll worry about that later.

here's some pics for your enjoyment... you can see the girls have filled out quite a bit, and i see pistils!

here's how i hooked up the trueair... i think it's gonna work perfectly as an exhaust!!

I use pipe cleaners, they work really well homer371
well, turns out the wire has been a little irritating to the stems... after about two days in one position, the stem started sort of growing into the wire (or the wire cutting into the stem, however you wanna think about it). just a little dent, nothing serious. i'm gonna look for something a little thicker so that this won't happen anymore -- where did you get yours? i'll have to look back at your thread lol.

hell yeah bro, thats great, good idea for the true air!! everything is looking real good man.
thanks brotha! you are the inspiration for both the trueair, and the uhaul box, so thank you sir. yeah after thinking about various configurations i put the trueair IN the box with the plug sticking out in a tiny hole, and the exhaust part of it blowing air out. i haven't air-sealed or light-sealed everything yet, but when i do i'll let you know how it does as odor control.

Nice Man! We got boxes popping everywhere..lol. CD you need to patent something..lol
hell yeah arch! for sure cd needs to patent something. "custom-built uhaul box, lights & vent, ready to use, $99.95, at concorddawn.com", lol.

thanks man, i forgot to buy pipe cleaners yesterday in my shopping extravaganza, but next time for sure. i need to do some new lst'ing, these babies are starting to stretch! +rep for stopping in.

Oh my lord such clean ghetto riggage that is amazing you obviously spent a lot of time thinking about how you'll be rigging the box and a day or so setting it up at least, amazing! +rep if I could but I needa spread it around more... +rep juju for you!

thanks hippysmoke, appreciate it bro! yeah i spent quite a bit of time thinking about it, etc. but the thing that got me jump started was getting that uhaul box! i love that shit. anyway i still have to adjust the lights (right now duct tape is the weakest link in the chain and i already accidentally burned a few leaves, d'oH!) and cut a hole for the intake fan... all will happen in the next day or two. +rep juju for you buddy (i also have to spread some love).

hey optics, i don't know about temps yet. i've been leaving the box half open with a fan blowing in and the trueair pulling air out, and with that temps are around 75-80. i should finish the vent system in the next couple days and i'll have a better idea.

update coming right up...

what up my homies?

i've been working on different lighting setups and in the process i made some pretty insane mistakes including (1) accidentally burning a couple of leaves on blue cream and (2) accidentally turning "off" the timer and leaving the lights on all night!?!?! :wall: . hope i didn't hermie them, but i guess if i did, i'll be collecting some seeds... actually i doubt it, but time will tell.

anyhoo, here's some pix of the setup.... i added two lights to the mix, so now i've got:
2 x T5s (24w, 3000k)
4 x cfls (23w, 2700k)
2 x cfls (23w, 6500k)
----------------------
total: 186 watts

those pistils popping. Although I have not said much (as I do not have much to contribute to the discussion), I have really been enjoying watching your grow. Love the homemade box and the general DIY vibe. Looking forward to seeing how similar your g13 x looks in bloom to mine...
