Purchase Help Please

First let me start by telling you how my closet is going to be set up ive made a grow tent 3'x2'x5.25' i plan to use this for my flowering, And i am useing the top of my closet for the veg stage it is 2'x4.5'x3'. i have posted a picture explaining how i plan to set up my closet. i just want to know if a 400 watt hps is too much cause its actualy cheaper to but that than a 250 watt from HTG. and what size exhaust should i get would a 4" 170cfm be enought for this.

the 400 is fine if you can vent it! does the light you are looking at let you hook ducting and a fan to it? is the ballast built into the hood? the ballast and light both produce heat. the fan depends on the size of your grow room, how much ducting there is and how many bends there are in it, if it is pulling through a filter and hood or just filter and how hot the light/ballast make the room. I would suggest a larger fan just because you can get a dimmer cord a home depot for $10 and run it at what ever speed you need.

400w is too much for that tent. Try a 250w, you'll have fewer heat issues to worry about and you can still grow some very fine herb (and plenty of it) with a 250w hps.

its an extra 60 bucks to have a air cooled hood and i dont really want to have a bigger fan cause im trying to keep noise down a little bit but if its needed i will

400 isn't to much heat for the tent! it depends on how it is vented! I would get the 400! if you only want the get the small fan get the air cooled hood and run ducting as straight as possible. the small fan should be enough to draw the heat off the light but you may need a second fan to run the carbon filter! I have a 1000 watt'er less than 2 feet from my plants and can rest my hand on the hood for as long as I want!
figure out what you want more! What's the price difference and think about your pocket book! if you end up needing a second fan is the price difference and time worth it? If you end up needing a second fan what is the noise from the 2 fans going to be like? When you slow down a larger fan they make less noise! The larger fan will move the heat from the hood a lot better than a small one!

you grow in a cardboard u-haul box with cfls,( https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/404334-wardrobe-box-grow.html ) I dont really see any fans and venting (not saying there is none but you can only do so much in a cardboard box). Not trying to trash your setup! just saying if you dont even use fans and large lights you shouldn't really tell others how!

$257 for a 400w dimmable lumatek with air cooled sealed hood here - http://www.urbansunshine.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=233_373_374&products_id=18514

That and HTGs 4" can and filter combo and you should be set. I doubt it would ever get to hot but if it does you can always dim it.

The $257 includes free shipping so its a bit better of a deal than HTGs packaged magnetic ballast, non aircooled hood deal for the same price after shipping is added.

/e I was looking at HTGs agrostar. Didn't realize that had a package for 119.

looks like it'll burn your house down .. what's that tent made from? Let me put it this way; I've had an extractor fail in my absence and HID/HPS get's awfully hot .. Ensure your tent is flame retardant .. apart from that It looks quite neat

i can add an air cooled hood for 60 bucks but thats starting to break the bank a little bit. when i have to add another fan. maybe ill just get teh smaller one for the moment just so i dont have to worry about he heat as much im stressing.

Nice post! except More light means more bud! I would move more air before I dimmed the light!

I really doubt he would ever have to dim it with a 170cfm fan sucking through a sealed hood. I'm running a 600w HID + 200w of flouros in about a 3x4 tent with a 440 cfm fan running half speed. 170 cfm would easily keep a 400w bulb cool and would exchange the tent's air every ten seconds.

both the 250 and the 400 will get hot in there! you will want to cool either one! you should be fine heat wise with the 400 w/ air cooled hood and keeping the ballast out of the room and the small fan! you may just need to add another fan later to run the carbon filter! Its hard to piece a grow together sometimes!

I wasn't "telling" anyone how to do anything. The OP was asking for opinions, based on the tent he/she has. I voiced my opinion...and my opinion remains the same (especially if the hood being used is not air-cooled or a cooltube).

I've grown many times with a 150w hps, and several times more recently with a 250w hps (in closets, not tents..with a S&P mixvent exhaust fan and 4" carbon scrubber). The end product was always very good, using either the 150w or 250w. My latest grow cab was my first attempt at using CFLs...and only because it wasn't feasible to use an hps in my current living situation. But, since I've used a 250w hps, and the OP was asking for advice about using either a 250w or 400w hps, I feel I'm qualified enough to offer my opinion here. He/she is certainly free to heed or ignore my advice. And, of course, you are free to voice your own opinion as well.
