if you're overheating your seeds, are you placing them DIRECTLY on the heating mat, or putting them in a dome too with the rippled bottom? the air space between the mat & plants should help, and putting a mat on a carpet too only add to the heat because of the insulation. the only issue i had was the balancing act of over & underwatering as i had crammed the entire mat with dozens of peat pellets that dry out after just one day of not checking the water when they weren't molding. in the future, i think i'll buy another mat so i can just use 16oz cups for better moisture control.

all i know for certain was last winter, strains that i'd had 100% viability from just months before in early fall turned 50% or worse in winter and once i got both my mat and humidity dome, i not only got close to 100% popping (if not maintaining, but that's my fault) but also watched everything sprout like crazy in fast forward. the best $40 or so i ever spent in my garden!

Interesting. I've accidentally cooked seeds using the mat with a rippled bottom dome. I would put them in a paper towel inside the dome. To many cooked seeds for me with that solution.

Now I germ in a ziplock with paper towel on top of my BC Northern Lights box that I use for vegging only. The heat from the top of the box is the perfect surface temperature on which to stick the ziplock. I leave the bag open a bit and cover the bag with a blacked-out dome. So far, I'm 95% on my germ rates with this technique I MacGuyvered. I'll try just a couple seeds at a time to make sure it works. I never germ more than 4 at a time though.

I wonder when we'll start seeing some of his African crosses. He states he is working with 15 African landrace strains.

you can also use a poor man's heating mat and put your plants on top of your fridge, and even stealthed in a cupboard. you'd have to make sure your beans are watered in the open because of the warm air flow off the condensers.

a little extra heat just speeds those chemical reactions up. one of the grow guides i read said "keep your roots warm & your leaves cool". i remember wanting to use heating cables when hydro was all the rage at the beginning of the indoor era. it would be a really good idea to use heating cables if you were doing a cold basement grow or in a winter room you're trying to force your plants to purple in. energetic roots make more bud. it's be interesting to test the effects of a heating mat on a clone against a twin. if nothing else, i bet the warmer soil evaporates faster

Something to consider ....

Subcool says that all seeds are asexual, meaning that they could end up either male or female upon germination. He claims that seeds germinated in a cooler environment tend to be a higher female ratio than seeds germinated in a warmer climate (heat mat).

I haven't researched this myself, just passing along info from a breeder.

I respectfully disagree as this would make fem seeds an impossibility, for if it is controlled by environment and not genetics then chemically induced "FEMALE" pollen would not have causation...so therefore that info is not accurate...regardless the source

You may be right, but what does the process of feminizing seeds have to do with the plants genetics? The plant is being altered through an external process using colloidal silver.

I'm no botanist, but citing a manipulated plant to make the claim that unaltered marijuana seeds are not asexual doesn't make sense to me.

This is what Dutch Passion has to say about it:

From literature and our own findings it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors.

The environmental factors that influence gender are:
* a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females.
* a higher potassium concentration will give more males.
* a higher humidity will give more females.
* a lower temperature will give more females.
* more blue light will give more females.
* Fewer hours of light will give more females.
It is important to start these changes at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks, before reverting to standard conditions.

to demonstrate that sex is genetically controlled...as the reason sts works is that the plant that was denied ethylene by the supplication of silver to block copper which is required for ethylene synthesis causes the plant to make male flower which produces pollen....but genetically the plant is female so no male genes are present so only female offspring are possible...if sex were not genetically decided then this process could not work at all but yet it does so illustrating that sex is genetically determined

OK. Not worth chasing our tails over, but I've provided two breeders opinions that disagree with your stance. I would think that people that do this for a living know what they're talking about ..... but maybe they don't.

Who knows.

Trying out a couple landraces this summer..... I'll keep everyone posted. In my opinion, genuine landrace strains are the best strains out there- they've been inbred for decades, so the genetics are very stable and there are usually only a couple of phenotypes within the strain...... Makes me want to travel the world and go to remote locations to find different landrace strains.

That would be awesome if you could keep us updated! I'm smoking on some new 100% sativas right now and I can't get enough of these damn things :-P.

All organically grown "Dog Shit (DS)" and "Thorn Oil". Both are pretty nice but I have no idea on lineage. Not quite on par with the Malawi I got from the same dispensary (same organic grower too) but better than any indica for daytime use. I also received a little Pineapple which was grown organically and is an indica dominant strain. Super tasty and good for sleepy time! Good luck and keep us posted!

Yea, gotta love pure sativas! I'll post a few pics of the landrace strains from Holy Smoke Seeds. I have (2) Mozambique Poison and (1) Bhutanese Thimphu. They've been outside for 19 days and were started indoors 27 days ago. I germed them late because I didn't want them getting extremely tall and I didn't want to have to deal with low stress training or topping because they're landrace strains and I want to see how they would grow au naturel. This is my first grow also, so be kind haha.

Great Review! Being a MMJ card holder, I looked up Puget Sound Health Alternatives and double checked they had the Malawi in stock before making the 20 mile drive up there from Federal Way. I went in with only the intentions of getting the Malawi but of course was pushed towards some of their other strains. The budtender "max" I believe his name was, sold me some Malawi, Dog Shit, and Thorn oil. All of which he said were pure 100% sativa's.

You see my dad who is 65 years old and I who am 28 yeas old, have been on a quest to find strains that produce a "fun" high. ALL the strains I have smoked locally here before and after I obtained my MMJ card don't produce any "fun" effects. I get tired, lethargic, anti-social, self-conscious, and dumb. They turn make me feel weird and make me sleepy. Extreme couch-lock, paranoia, and anxiety! No fun what so ever!

Below is a quote from my father from a forum...

"I started smoking in the 70's and remember the quality of the highs were amazing. They induced fits of laughter, incredible munchies, made you feel uplifted, inspired and happy. I noticed a drop in effects around the early 90's. Didn't really know what had happened, but the fun high sorta went away. I shrugged it off thinking maybe it was my tolerance had gotten to high or just getting older in age that lowered the quality of the buzz.

It wasn't until I started talking to other smokers around my age and slightly younger that I realized it wasn't just me. Many people agreed the "fun stuff" disappeared in the early 90's.

I researched online for a couple months but didn't find many leads to help me understand what might have happened. However, I believe I've come to the conclusion that the majority of strains available today are more indica dominant which is not what I was use to having. Since I read, almost all the strains in the 70's-80's were pure Sativa's. I didn't really know the difference between the two back then. Nobody really did or cared. We all just knew what the effects were and we enjoyed it.

ALL the strains I've been experimenting with since the 90's have been hybrids and I haven't had any luck. They make me tired, lethargic, anti-social and sorta dumb. If we would of been sold today's weed back in the 70's-80's, we would of cursed the dealer out and asked for a refund! Not kidding!

A part of me also believes the plants of today are being bred wrong. I've always been a firm believer a "happy plant produces a happy high." The breeders of today are pretty much torturing these poor little plants. They force the budding cycle by leaving the lights on longer than what nature intended. Then they throw away all the males leaving just the females. Of course, some of the females may turn both sexes in a last desperate attempt to make seeds. But oh well, they mess with them also. Now they even have feminized seeds! Which produce only 100% female plants. Don't asked me how they genetically altered that but it's just wrong. These breeders might be correct that doing all this stuff produces more THC or whatever, but it doesn't matter. The highs are not good. They get you way stoned...but not high. There is a difference.

Some of the best highs I ever had were males plants and it was not this dense bud stuff you see today. It was just dried, BROWN leaves. We would smoke this stuff and laugh straight for 2 1/2 hours! It would cause visual and audio hallucinations, colors were VIBRANT, everything sparkled to the extreme where you could barely see even squinting your eyes almost entirely shut. It was an instant good time. One joint for 5 people and we all got RIPPED, for hours!

It seems all of the smokers today are all caught up on the appearance, taste, smell, texture, stickyness of the buds and all this bogus horseshit. But who really cares. They quality of the high with all this shit is lame. They've almost turned smoking weed into a wine connoisseur type of hobby. It's stupid.

Many people (mostly today's young smokers) believe I am wrong saying all this stuff. That the weed today is way more potent than the "old school shit weed" they call it, we had "back in the day." They may be correct but it's not the same high in ANY way let me assure you. Being around since the rise of the popular marijuana in the 70's all the way to the present, I can honestly say that something has happened. The weed has taken a wrong turn somewhere. Either it's because of all this crossbreeding, or Indica strains or something.

I'm sure somebody out there that is a true connoisseur of what good marijuana is suppose to be, has a stash and is having the good oh laugh your ass off kind of high. I guess we just need to find that person. There out there somewhere.

I also wanted to note. I posted my beliefs on another forum a while back and got many responses from some young smokers. They said "okay gramps. For one thing, everything is more fun when your young. Your just remember your fun adolescence. Sorry your old now, but the highs are the same."

For one, how could they possibly know what the highs were back in the 70's. They weren't even born! Second, if "everything is more fun when your young," and the highs are truly the same as they were in the 70's, they why don't I see ANY of today's kids rolling on the ground laughing, eating like crazy, smiling ear to ear, hallucinating, socializing or anything along those lines. It appears to me it's not doing anything like the old weed did. My son who is 28 and I go to Hempfest every year where there are thousands of people. Everyone is stoned. You can see it in everyone's eyes and smell it everywhere. But we never see anybody that truly look like there high on the old style weed. Everyone is just walking around like zombies. Quite, sluggish, awkward and too themselves. I wish we could of had video camera's back in the 70's during Woodstock to show everyone the difference. Back then everyone was extremely friendly, outgoing, willing to share the joint with you. We would smoke a joint together with strangers and would become instant good friends on this stuff, it made you break down your defense walls and ego and let you truly become yourself. It was very pleasurable. I haven't done the popular drug "Ecstasy" but my son describes it as this kind of high.

All these young kids think us old folks are nuts and don't know what were talking about here. But let me assure you. The Cocaine we had in the 70's was more pure and the high was better, the LSD we had in the 70's was more pure and the high was better. The Opium we had in the 70's was more pure and the high was better. The Mescaline we had in the 70's was more pure and the high was better.

....let me assure you. The Cannabis we had in the 70's was better as well."

THAT'S THE END OF MY DAD's post.

So anyway, after reading your post here about the Malawi I decided to go up, buy some and give it a shot. Haven't done so yet. Mostly because I'm afraid it will induce the same old couch-lock type of high and I really need to be productive this week.
Both my father and I are intrigued after reading the effects you felt. Especially that you mention it's the best high you've seen since the 80's. It sounds promising. Maybe it's the strain or maybe it's the way the grower has grown it. We shall see! :-)

Thank you!

Awesome man! Nice to hear someone else made the trip over there. Myself, I have to drive for 6 hours just to get there, so I only go once in a while.

The last time I was there they were out of the Malawi (which is in stock now) so I picked up the Dog Shit, Thorn Oil, ChemdawgXgreenCrack, Sour Diesel and a little Pineapple for night time. They are all organic and grown to perfection in my opinion. Nothing quite hit the high of the Malawi, but very nice. The Dog Shit, Thorn Oil and CDxGC all caused fatigue at the end of a full day of smoking (granted the sunlight shining on us all day didn't help).

Their organic Sour Diesel was really good though. Straight get up and go, just like the organic Sour Diesel I grow. I bought some to compare the two and I like theirs better than mine. Mine was a DNA strain but theirs is the real deal.

Quality of a plant does have to do with how it's grown as I'm sure the bud tender told you, but I tend to be of the opinion that the strain itself plays a very big part too. The other strains grown by the same person were good too, but not like the Malawi... at least not to me.

I think you'll like the Malawi and your father too so let me know how it treats you! It may not be on par with the amazing high his forum post describes, but it may be the best thing he's found in a long time!

WOW! transeki green! i haven't heard of that strain since around '05! it was always of interest.

ALL the strains I've been experimenting with since the 90's have been hybrids and I haven't had any luck. They make me tired, lethargic, anti-social and sorta dumb. If we would of been sold today's weed back in the 70's-80's, we would of cursed the dealer out and asked for a refund! Not kidding!
that's why i've told 20 or so dealers to all go fuck themselves the second they act like their overpriced schwag is doing me a favor. i CLEARLY remember the 1st time i smoked 2 different indica buds i scored for the $8 i had in my pocket. when i realized that even if i smoked both at once, nothing remotely fun (high) was going to happen as i started out smoking trippy ass cali grown pinecone columbian gold that only got stoney after a month of constant which would clear up after a week of detox.

that you STILL can't find any WORTHY shit on the streets, even now when it's easily doable with C99 & A11 at the very least, schwag purveyors are still pushing their "bag appeal" myth.

i hear ya. i'll take FLUFFY, generic smelling & grassy tasting gold with it's tiny fuzzy pistils over the stickiest white strain you could throwdown every time as there's more to potency than resin content and i defy any smoker to take 4 deep woofing hits of gold or a real IBL dominant and not get so fucked they wish they could sleep off the room spinning dizzies.

while i'm back in this thread, it's looking like i might wind up using my malawi gold as my male breeder instead of 9 week jack's cleaner 2 figuring that's the most IBL strain i have other than my fussy wench highland thais and can only improve the buzz of almost everything it touches.

it's looking like i'll be spraying holy smokes malawi into:
the same, JC2, sweet haze, haze x skunk, lemon skunk, sativa trans-love, some of my C99 x A11 crosses, CH9 jack & jack 33, buddha's sister
and maybe:
chocolope, cannalope haze, sannies' lemon thai, jack herer f7 & columbian jamaican IBL or super critical haze or mango haze.

(sound like stuff anyone would want to blaze?)

it would be nice if fans of getting high would weigh in on the best indoor doable highs i should be working towards. i'm more than happy with JC2, sweet haze, haze skunk & 8 miles high too when that comes back, but would like even higher quality where i can find it. i'm expecting malawi to be one of the best prectical "hazes" to start breeding with. the more serious stuff happens at 12 weeks plus and even 15 weeks plus with some IBLs going into 20 weeks even

Got another batch of Malawi this last week!! It seems much more psychedelic this time with some cool visual effects when going from light to dark rooms. One thing though, this batch seems more potent and it actually had me a bit drowsy after smoking a full bowl to myself. Taking just a couple puffs seems better to me. Then I'm high for 3-4 hours and still motivated by the time it wears off. The taste and smell are identical to the last batch but this batch seems to have more big buds. I hope Jgerlitz chimes back in on his experience with the Malawi!
