    Seedling trouble

That leaning over is called damping off. It's caused from a fungal infection and too much moisture in the grow medium. I struggled with this for a long time. I finally got a steam cleaner and sterilized everything, added filters to my intakes, and watered with Southern Ag Garden Friendly...

Oyster Shell Flour in Coco ROLS Mix?

That was a long time ago but here goes… I changed the soil formula considerably. I dropped the 3 parts of coco for 3 parts of peat. For aeration I now use 3 parts of a 50/50 mix of pumice and long fiber coco coir (not the peat). I also add 3 parts of a 50/50 mix of EWC and compost. That’s my...

Long Time Smoker, First time Grower.... Question about DTE and living soil

Ime, living soil works much better without the fabric pots. Thet tend to dry out a lot in the perimeter, which isn’t a good thing for living soil. edit: unless you use this type: https://www.grassrootsfabricpots.com/product/living-soil-fabric-pot/

Home Depot is a bad joke

I hear ya. I find such variation on the quality of coco coir, from various suppliers/batches. I have put a lot of work into my coco prep because of that. Hydrate completely with aloe, sift out small stuff/dust, buffer with pond water, OSF and EWC. I often see up to half of the coir is just...

    Improving The native soil

IMHO I wouldn't use perlite in the yard. Been there, done that. Calcium bentonite, pebbles, lava rock and pumice are all good alternatives.

    Cal mag recommendation?

Epsom salt contains magnesium and sulfur. Both are great for weed, but no calcium. Don't need to PH organics as long as the soil is healthy. Dolomite lime may not be the best choice... depending on what's in your soil... as it's a 2:1 ca:mg. How's your water? It might have the...

    Question re: activating biochar

To activate my biochar I put the EWC (and other goodies) in a sock and tied it off. Then threw the sock, some molasses and the biochar in 5 gallons of water and bubbled for 1 week. I really don't measure any more, but tend to go on the lighter side when amending.

Would this work for soil moisture retention

Rice hulls are great. Par boiled of course.

Banana tee - very low pH

I have no conclusive evidence that top dressing dried and crushed banana peels works. It did not attract any pests and it didn't burn my plants. All I grew with it came out great. But I didn't do any scientific tests to see if it made a difference or not. I've never made FPJ from already...

    A SIP to Mars.

Normally I would agree, but I'm using a living soil and my aim is to keep the soil conditions consistent. In my case I'm kind of growing the soil and the soil is growing the plants. Plus, as long as there is an air gap (or sufficient soil aeration), the plants will take off when their roots...

    Backyard shed questions.

I'm currently running a 7'x8' shed with 8' ceiling. It's fully insulated with an ac, dehuey, huey, heater, co2, exhaust fan and electric intake dampers-- allows the system to run sealed or open... depending on weather. All controlled with an arduino, some relays and sensors. The shed itself...

    A SIP to Mars.

I'm using a very similar setup except that I don't have that pipe. Instead I have a "fill reservoir" attached to the main rez via 1" pvc with a float valve. Working great so far. Went on an 11 day road trip and the ladies were perfect when I got back. I'm hoping roots don't clog it... we'll...

    Tent walls sucking in

I have a 39"x39" tent and the 6" ac infinity as an exhaust fan. Before last night I was running the tent with the vents open and the duct ports partially open. Just last night I installed a portion of 6" duct in each of my lower duct ports and curved them around some to prevent light leaks and...
