Could someone explain to me please what is fimming? and exactly what that does to your plant?

I will be doing my first DWC and I'm worried about messing up the nutes/water mixture. I am also unsure what type of nutrients I need to buy. Can I find good nutes at walmart/home depot/pet smart? or only from hydro store? online maybe?
