I have to say that people generally understate the heat and contact implications of cfl's. I was pretty clumsy with them (as I am, naturally :-o), and at first I thought I was having soil/fert...
An option would be cut the bottom off (assuming it's a plastic pot that you don't mind sacrificing), then gently (make that gently) slitting it down the side.
Another slit at 180 degrees would be even better. In the larger pot have a hole as close to the size of the smaller pot as possible...
