The short answer is that it depends on where you live. Soil differs incredibly on this amazingly diverse planet. If you have dirt with earthworms in it, it is a good sign that your plants will be happy. Make sure that it is not too heavy. Soils are basically made of three parts: sand, silt, and clay.
BUT for Cannabis indoor growing we do a whole different thing, even if we only use slow release and teas. The potting mixes for indoor use (like subcool's) are designed for Cannabis. These are made of peat moss, coco, bark, and perlite (not sand/silt/clay), and are not dirt so much as they are a growing media. High air to water ratio relative to typical top soil.
If you read Subcool's threads, he uses expensive store bought peat/perlite potting mixes designed for Cannabis, and then adds food in meal/slow release form. If you read my threads, I use expensive store peat/coco/bark, because I despise perlite. And I add liquid and soluble vegan organic food with every watering.
