30'x8' room design (lights)

I'm a complete newb when it comes to indoor growing and would like some suggestions on grow room design. The room is 30'x8' with 9'2" ceilings. I already have room painted and everything, but next step is lights. I want a professional level set up and willing to pay extra for quality, but obvious don't want to waste money. I was recommended by a friend to put 18 3x3 LEC lights in there. He also recommend the Gavita lights, but said ceiling might be a tad too low. what do you guys recommend?

You can't go wrong with the LEC's, they will produce for you. You could probably get away with 16 of them as the overlap as you go with multiple units increases and you can run them a bit higher yet get the same/good coverage.

i dont think gavita even sells an LEC. they do an LEP. go with the LEC 315w you have plenty of height for that. as groerr said, these are a great light.

Thanks for the recommendation. He was saying these lights can pull 2 pounds a light. sound about right?

no, for your size room, 630 should work better, half as many lights to deal with. I would think you can do 2 pounds with it, but footprint is larger as it is double the power. 4x4 footprint and equal to about a 1000w HID.

OK great, what about how i should set up trays? Whats the best option? 2 3 foot wide trays next to each other and have one foot to walk on sides? or 3 foot tray against the wall with two feet in the middle as walk way? That seems like the easiest option in terms of plant upkeep, but not sure it's ideal with lights?

9 ft. ceilings is plenty for Gavitas, especially if you're training your plants thoroughly (topping, supercropping, trellis). I'd go with the Gavitas in your position. Room size is large enough for it, your budget allows for it, and they are killer lights. Just depends on whether or not you can cool the room properly, which costs money.

So less than 16 lights with 630? was that a recommendation for 315?
The 16x 316's was what I'd go with. Problem with the 630's is their footprint is more like 4x4, maybe up to 5x5 which doesn't fit nicely and would still require a bunch of units.

Using the 315's, I'd go with side by side 3x3 trays in the center, a foot along all sides and ends to take advantage of the bleeding between all the lights while maintain access to all of them.

Ya the cooling was one big concern of mine especially during the up coming summer months. Complete beginner question but could i have the 12 hour light period be say 8 pm to 8 am to avoid peak heat time? I'm going to have windows and everything covered so it could be pitch dark during day time.

That seems to be the norm for many here including me, I run 7:00 pm - 7:30 am. It's also the least expensive time for hydro (many areas have tiered pricing for peak periods) so works well on both counts.

Do you think the one foot on each side is sufficient?

It's tight but doable and would maximize your space, I run a small room which gives me about 4x8 usable space and run 3' to even 3.5' on the width, leaves me just enough room to get at all of them.
