Russia protests: Opposition leader Navalny and hundreds others arrested

Russia's main opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, has been arrested at an anti-corruption protest
he organised in the capital, Moscow.

Thousands of people joined rallies nationwide, calling for the resignation of

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev over corruption allegations.

At least 500 other protesters were detained in the capital and across the country.

Most of the marches were illegal, organised without official permission.

TV pictures showed demonstrators chanting "Down with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin!",

"Russia without Putin!" and "Putin is a thief!".

Correspondents say the marches appear to be the biggest since anti-government demonstrations in 2011/2012.

"Guys, I'm fine. No need to fight to get me out. Walk along Tverskaya [Moscow main street].

Our topic of the day is the fight against corruption,"

State TV channels did not cover the demonstrations.

Local media reports suggested the authorities pressured students not to attend.

In some cities, exams were scheduled on Sunday.

Alexei Navalny announced his intention to run for president in 2018 against Vladimir Putin.

But he is barred from doing so after being found guilty in a case he said was politicised.

He said on his website that protests were planned in 99 cities,

but that in 72 of them authorities did not give permission.

@vostok I've heard (from the BBC) that many Russians actually feel that Putin is fighting the good fight against corruption in the Russian government.

Do you agree with this?

Do you think Putin is part of the problem or are the Russian people correct in their assessment of him?

Sadly, he doesn't ever respond to these questions..I'd love to hear the answers from someone who is just a citizen there.

He probably doesn't want to get arrested. Lol

There is a good chance Putin can just become the next Stalin and bring back the Gulags. I wouldn't say shit if I was a Russian citizen I'd just buy an AK-47.

Putin has been in 19 years..??? many teens know nothing else and is seen as a type of Stalin, he gets in because many of the peeps are 'born again Christians' of what his party plays too
like republicans in US, Putin is scared and power mad, and needs to be in control for life, a whole generation says different, in my career as a weed-ite I've been seriously busted 5-6 times
with maybe 200-300 year prison terms, each time I bribe the cops, easy at the price of a Chinese made blue-ray player is typical (here us$75.00?)
yes I've been stupid at times mostly at the border or during shipping...I get impatient and bored,
5 minutes after I just need to mow these fuckers down, these conscript soldiers become cops just for the graft, either that or back to the farm, they come from
Putin must go, and a fair English type parliament must grow, many think we should copy Sweden or Norway which are fair and stable countries I like that, Norways got 2 votes ..thats good

Russia jails protests leader Alexei Navalny for 15 days
Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been jailed for 15 days for resisting police orders during mass protests on Sunday.

Mr Navalny was among several hundred people who were detained in connection with the rallies across the country.

The court in Moscow earlier fined him the minimum 20,000 roubles ($350) for organising the banned protests.

On Monday the Kremlin accused the opposition of encouraging lawbreaking and provoking violence.

Some young people were paid to attend, a presidential spokesman said.

Mr Navalny later repeated accusations of corruption against Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The allegations were the main reason behind Sunday's protests, which drew thousands of demonstrators nationwide,

including in St Petersburg, Vladivostok, Novosibirsk, Tomsk and several other cities, as well as Moscow

Perhaps the most striking thing about the protests that swept Russia this weekend

was the make-up of the crowd which included significant numbers of young people, even schoolchildren.

The Kremlin's spokesman has criticised organisers for luring them onto the streets,

claiming they were paid to turn out. Silent until he spoke, state TV channels have picked up that suggestion and run with it.

But these were young Russians who have grown up under Vladimir Putin on a diet of patriotism.

On Sunday, they joined a crowd chanting "Putin - thief" and "Russia will be free!"

Their presence is proof of how effectively Alexei Navalny and his team use social media.

Here in the USA we have to interpret our news propaganda as well. The aims of the authorities are similar the world over; take all the money and control the populace when they complain of the abuse. I applaud those who fight in places where doing so is much more dangerous than here.

Russian programmers (at least in the previous two decades -- maybe still today) earned a reputation for being very clever programmers (much more so than their American counterparts), largely because they often had to squeeze so much out of outdated hardware. I'm guessing there might be similar phenomena at play here.
