CXB3590 versus Quantum Boards

Hey guys i am fairly new to RIU. I came here about a month or two ago to learn about COB LEDs and I ended up building 20 CXBs powered by 5 HLG-1400a drivers. I am now noticing more mentions of Quantum Boards and am beginning to wonder if i should have went with quantum boards instead of my CXBs? TBH, this is my first grow and i wanted to use whatever LED technology is currently most efficient. What is it about the quantum boards that people are saying they will be the future of LED technology? Am I missing out on much by choosing CXBs over quantum boards? Pros vs. Cons?

Don't think you wasted your money. I'm running basically the same, except 16 cxb3590 on 4 drivers... badass light. Even if quantum boards can outperform them. Wait until you go to expand with another fixture. Then get you some qb's... then you'll have 2 rooms with good lights. Unless qb's have been outperformed by then, in that cases go with the latest and greatest

Right now I'm in a similar position, although I have yet to pull the trigger on either cobs or quantum boards. Looking at it purely from an efficiency (ratio of light to heat) perspective, it would seem that softly driven QBs have a similar efficiency to softly driven cbx3590s.

After that, looking at cost, one QB seems to be similar or slightly lower in cost to two cbx3590s driven at similar light levels when you include a passive heat sink, driver and mounting hardware.

From my noob perspective, the QBs seem to more closely mimic how the sun actually works, e.g., more even distribution of light across the grow space, vs. cobs, which are more like point sources.

The question that seems to be as of yet unanswered is will the QBs have the same useable life cycle as the cbx3590s, which appear to have established a track record for being reliable.

for high power stuff youd spend a good chunk of change on quantums, but as expensive as crees are for a given efficiency it might be a wash

I'm in the same boat, except I need a light for a 2x2 grow tent. So I'd imagine the quantum boards would allow me to get more height out of my setup, because they can be closer to the canopy, and take less space compared to the cree cobs with that huge cooliance heatsink... it's about the same price give or take, thing is the cree's have a track record sort off, and I'm too scared to pull the trigger on 2 Quantum boards (Should i get 3000k x2 ?)
Other then the fact these can be closer to the canopy, I don't know... I suspect that perhaps the cree cobs have more light penetration, it's more focused ? but It's just a guess. maybe being more evenly spread out across an actual board is better lol

Well I've used the quantum boards they work well but if you want plants over 4' you'll have to spend money on optics for the QB thus making them more expensive than Cree CXB3590 COBs

This is just not true and you did not give the quantums a honest run because you sold them probably 4 weeks after you built it lol.my last run under the qb plants are over 5 feet tall no optics tests results are in my thread.when your cobs go over 22% thc come tell us how much better they are haha.maybe you were doin it wrong ?

:eyesmoke:
@Shugglet can you direct the op and myself to these grows that show how much better cheap cobs are than the cree grows all over this site?
To the op you made a good choice for your first build, quantums are simple as hell to assemble and put out a ton of light so people will flock to them for ease of build, the efficiency part is a major bonus.

I did lol do you know about these?

I haven't figured out the price yet but on Cree CXB3590 $35 Meanwell HLG-185H $45

In my 2x2 I use heatsinks usa and fans no height issues there. In terms of performance I am looking at next technology to out performs cxb and that is more full spectrum approach with the chilledledgrowlight.com 90w and 175w boards with same as qb but color corrected spectral supplement

So there's something even better than the samsungs now ... great, how do you people keep up
well off to read everything on that chilled site...

Yep how much you gonna sell it for if I can remember @SupraSPL mentioned them 3 years back. Now that I have your attention can you help me with Korean Natural growing? I didn't think you'd attack me lol. I'm selling parts not lights. I'm glad you did this because we all buy from the same places lol. I'm don't care about fighting you. You have a bad attitude towards me. I did but I'm changing that. The price if you where to sell them it would be double lol Why are you so hell bent on me?

@Greengenes707 can you tell people why you don't like me? I'm not attacking you so why are you attacking me? Let's be grown men especially mr I'm older than you and I shouldn't be acting like what I did it's bad for business
