not to beat a dead horse or to sound like a broken record, but fresh comfrey will cover nearly ALL def problems you get.
topdress fresh cut shredded comfrey mixed witht hat nice pimp castings you just got, and you'll never see a N,K,cal, or mag def again.
it was all the nutrients bioavailable, and the correct ratio of cal to mag as well. not to mention an impressive potassium content too.
further still the amount of super available nitrogen is badass too, as many tend to run a lil dry on that later in flower

yeah mosses are pretty cool. found some cool lookin liverwort thallus this spring too. i just wish i didn't have to leave those mushrooms in a public location lol. but they're too small to pick. if someone else wants to pick them, oh freakin well! I don't like pickin dinky ones. I like to let them grow and pick the big boys. 1 large one is the same as picking like 5-8 of the small ones.

Ahhhhhhhhh the first compost pile of the year.... basically used 60% grass clippings and 40% of some half finished compost. I didn't have the High N ingredients so I just used extra grass clippings. She's sitting at a nice temperature after the first 4 days.... I'll be turning it probably in 2 days. I know when it starts getting hot like that it depletes the O2 levels inside the pile, so a turning will be necessary. i haven't even had a chance to brew a tea yet either (though I'm sure the old compost had populations) but I want to get that going today/tomorrow as well.

Well it's starting to get warmer out now SO I think i'm going to start doing a weekly IPM on the plants. I'll have some pics up shortly of the GG#4 that I'm about to take down.

also the container experiment was a complete fail due to not being home during the week when it had to go into jars so it all got mixed together! lol. I'll do another one soon. Oh well!

according to elaine ingham, it is necessary. the center of the piles become very O2 deficient at high temps like that. it's a breeze to turn anyway. she has a whole method for it. top of the pile becomes the middle of the turned pile. middle goes to the ground layer, and the ground layer goes to the top. easy peazy! remove cage, reset it next to the pile, and get to turnin :) also turning helps the material break down at consistent speed rather than the outside of the pile not breaking down as well as the center portions. she says she can make compost in 28 days! dang. i know my biology is not that good yet... so it'll probably be like 45-60 days for me until i can get this pile inoculated with some good forest soil.

160°F - you need to turn, NOW!
I think it's 155° in Fahrenheit, that'S the temp you need to maintain for 3 days in every part of the pile -- as soon as you go over that, the beneficials start dying, and you are gassing off the nutrients
There's also an interview with Elaine by the Valhalla Movement on Youtube, she goes into nice details there, if I remember correctly...

yeah i turned it yesterday, as i was thinking the same thing as what you mentioned. I know the interview that you're referring to. I'll go back and watch it again just to make sure that I'm remembering things properly :) Glad I went with my gut and turned that sucker! I'll be watching it carefully. I think she says 131 degrees for 13-18 days or something like that is ideal. i dunno. will watch and reference again :) Thank you! I need to come by your conundrum page soon. I been so busy! I bet your garden is looking magnificent.

edit: the pile is already heating up to 153ish again... thinking about turnin it tomorrow...

I'm gonna turn it in a couple hours and I'll take some shots. The input materials didn't look too different from when I first put them in. The grass is losing some green color, pile is nice and steamy. wondering if I should water it down a lil bit to try and bring the temp down a touch. Tarp seems to be holding onto the moisture well.
