How should I be topping off? Fresh pH water or the nutrient mix.
either way. some people top off with nutes for the whole grow and never change a res

some start with nutes and top off with water and at the end of the week start over again.

Are you saying some people never change the reservoir water?
Sounds like I've been doing something in between. I change my reservoir every 7-10 days with fresh nutrient solution and Hydro guard. I've been topping off with freshwater pH water as needed.

I have a 5 gal with Silica , Hydroguard , Cal/Mag and Mammoth. It's pH'd to 5.8 I top off daily untill I have replaced the 4 gallons in my DWC. Then replace with a fresh mix. I never get any burn and my roots are white as snow.

about 10 days?
Depending on the size of the plant, usually like every 7-9 days fully mature cuz my air stones are so big it actually usually still has a couple gallons at the bottom, I don't let it get below the air stones. For sake of doing it on the weekend I usually just do it every Sunday.

I got a short water hose and ran a pipe off the tap into my shed so I can just top off when the level goes down, usually twice a week

Im doing my first dwc. 2 plants in a 7gal tote. I just top off when needed. The way my room is built i couldnt get the tote and plant out without destroying the plant. I use SM-90 and have no root rot. Plants are Big and look great

It's definitely worth trying it out, to top up with nute water, if only to be able to put off changing the res an extra week.

That being said, I am now sticking with plain water for now (only on my 2nd dwc grow). Seems to me topping up with plain water is more beginner-friendly - just need more frequent res changes
