DIY with Quantum Boards

Can anyone help explain the cost differences between a DIY COB LED setup and QB setup for a 4x4 tent? I don't think height will be an issue which I believe is a QB benefit since I can fit a 6' or 7' high tent. I should have no problem getting an LED rig far enough away from the tops.

What are the benefits? What drawbacks might there be? Seems like QB may throw off even less heat than a COB LED setup. Are yields, THC production, electrical costs beneficial for QB over LED?

Sorry for the generic questions... I'm a newbie to all of this and have been doing tons of COB LED research, the more I learn the more questions I have. And now I'm reading about QB and have even less answers and more questions!
honestly, i'm thinking about combining them both. the only real difference is the dispersion of light. a QB has the same or close to the same number of diodes a cob has, but the cob focuses light on one point, while the qb spreads that light out over the whole plant from different angles so you get the best penetration possible from that amount of light.i'm thinking of making a QB with a hole in the center to install a cob in.
its not that a qb produces less heat than a cob, again, its dispersion. the cob has all the diodes packed as tightly together as they can have them, and require a large heatsink and usually a fan. the qb produces the same amount of heat per wattage (all lights do) but they're all spread out, they have the mass of the pcb to absorb some of that heat, and the sinks get rid of the rest faster than a cob, purely because of surface area.
again, power depends on how you drive them. don't think of a qb and a cob as two separate things, think of them as the same thing in different configurations. they're l.e.d.s on pcb boards, the biggest difference is how far apart they're mounted on that board.

They both use similar technology. Blue led covered with phospor for conversion to white light. QBs spread the heat out more easily and are very efficient. Ease of assembly with QB is a major advantage. Not that cobs are hard. Multiple sources of light seem to promote better penetration. Check this thread and others for results ie Napalm D's and Captian Morgan's threads as well as budzbuddha threads.

I was thinking of using these or something similar as a precautionary measure against the fungus gnats that turn up from time to time. A good idea do you think? Also was going to use ecothrive biosys. I've heard some good reports about this product. What do you reckon mate?

:bigjoint:
They'll not work for the gnats.
I checked defenders uk site n they don't have anything for sorting the gnats.
Yellow sticky traps and making sure your soil dries out on top layer helps get rid and neem oil.
After battling spidermites over the years I'd imagine fungus gnats would be a stroll in the park to sort....... :D

@Stephenj37826 Hi Stephen, do you foresee a time in the near future when QB's will be permanently available? I understand that you have to get components etc from sources that dictate availability, but will this situation continue or change do you think?
Not knocking you guys at all BTW, I think you are and have done a great job so far so keep up the good work!
The orders that are arriving now where placed 2-3 months ago. We are working on fixing this problem. Each subsequent release is larger than the last.

Look into gnat nicks. Also look for bacillus thuringiensis..... Commonly known as mosquito dunks.

I see that on the HLG 550 a meanwell 480H c2100A is used. Is that a series/parallel combo?
1. I want to make two separate rails with 2 boards each. Can I use one 240H-c2100B per rail with two boards wired in parallel to hit the same power? Or are the A drivers necessary to hit the 520W for 4 boards?
I ask because I want to hook these up to an led controller. But if it means losing power I would rather run the A drivers.

This is my second time ordering, the shipping time is infuriating. Something has to be done, the lights are good but can we get some better reaction time from the other end? Seems like these guys are purchasing inventory based on the number of buys they get then shipping them.
My kit shipped one week after I put in the order. But I ordered the very minute they went on sale. I'm going to guess that they're shipping in the order they received the orders? Anyway, I can sympathize, but I have to say I'm happy with the shipping time. Seems reasonable under the circumstances?

thanks for understanding. These were out of stock for weeks so we got a surge of orders.
Reducing the time/cost to DIY a lamp was the main goal of QB project. I apologize if these are slow fulfillment times are bothering some people.
We are working hard on fulfilling order and streamlining order fulfillment.

All Components are in stock and being processed as fast as possible. orders are not pre packaged and packed to order

QB Components, Boards, Heatsinks Lead time 1-2 weeks from order date.

Given the large number of changes to orders and order status emails, looks like it will take up to 3 weeks from order date.
have a great weekend :peace:
