had scale similar to what your leaf looks like on a potted lemon tree once, I threw it out in the snow before I even bothered to try and treat it, didn't want any chance of transferring it to my lovely ladies.

those are not sugar ants.
those ants love aphids. they farm them, moving them from plant to plant. they defend the plant from other predators while the aphid larvae feeds off of the life giving force of the leaves. They prod the larvae and keep them awake eating, stimulating them any way they can.
All the while, the ends, the prize, is seeping out the larvae asses and the ants drink all night and day like unshaven sexually confused vikings at the ballet theatre

My list of reincarnation candidates is two shorter.

I'm not saying those are aphids, just that when ants come to the marijuana garden, oak tree, sunflower, etc.....aphids are the reason.

They look like scales to me but I'm not an expert. Ants are attracted to scales especially in the US South. I only know this from a scale issue we had in an outdoor landscape garden. I think the ants drink something oozing out of the scales.
