any of you guys/gals know of an online US based store for cheap scotch prices?

i found city wine cellar.com out of NY that has the cheapest price so far. 82 per bottle shipped. it's 100 locally.

wanna treat myself to 3 bottles of Lagavulin 16 this Xmas. Santa said no coal this year and scotch instead.

I haven't extensively looked, best I've found thus far is Bev-Mo and it's not that cheap. Usually a few dollars less than elsewhere

If a Laphroaig 18 is the metric for the gold standard, this Jura is around 6/10.

Not nearly enough peat or smoke for my taste, but perfectly drinkable for the price - about 40 of your American dollars for a 1L bottle.

For an extra $20, I'd go for a Lagavulin 16. Now that I think about it, the one I posted at the top of this page! Bags of peat smoke in that one.

I went to the Isle of Skye in August and swerved into the Talisker distillery. Another one with peaty, smokey goodness I would definitely recommend.

Do it! I have, and I've been to the Laphroaig distillery too. It's a pilgrimage I would encourage every whisky enthusiast to make at least once if possible.

Truth be told, Skye is an even more beautiful island than Islay. There really is something magical about Skye, and if you make it to Scotland for your 50th, it would be criminal not to make the drive across the bridge to Skye. You can fill a hip flask with some locally distilled Talisker to keep warm and walk up the hills to the fairy pools.

Lewis and Harris is stunning too, and a distillery was opened at the south of the island a couple years ago.

I am happy to bombard you with a list of places you might want to visit while you're here.

EDIT:

p.s. this Jura is quite moreish. Onto my 2nd dram. That first one was a risk given that I've been nursing a brutal hangover all day.

I'll take you up on that offer when it gets closer

I did some work in N Ireland and Scotland many years ago. the Diageo plant outside belfast and the johnnie walker around glasgow ( i think). played at troon, gleneagles, turnberry (before that fucktard trump bought it) and a couple courses in n ireland.

the scottish guys i worked with were absolutely amazed that i played 3 rounds of golf in scotland and didnt' get rained on! lol.

i'd like to rent a campervan and see the whole thing especially the Highlands.

Golf, whisky, camper van, Highlands/Outer Hebrides.. You are talking my language. The only thing sure to scupper things is the weather. Your Scottish pals were right to be amazed by your luck with the dry weather. Expect wind and rain, and be thankful if you're spared for a few days.

I played the Centenary at Gleneagles about 10 years ago on what felt like the only day of sunshine we got that year. I'll never forget it. The bunkers were 15ft deep, and anything an inch to the left or right of the fairway was ridiculous rough. I lost half a dozen balls in that stuff, easy.

i did the kings course at gleneagles. is the centenary the newish one by nicklaus?

how long would you give to do a proper tour with a campervan? i'm thinking 5 days min. i won't be golfing this trip with the wifey and kiddo.

the 2nd part of the trip that i want to do is rent a canal boat and do a tour of holland: amsterdam, gouda etc all by canals. but i don't want to cut short my time in Scotland. other than new zealand, it's the prettiest country i've ever been to.

That's the one.

How much time do you have? Highland and island road trips aren't short driving distances, and the roads are, at best, one lane of traffic in either direction. You'd be lucky to cover more than 50 miles in an hour. Give yourself a good week, and map out your journey so you aren't spending all day every day behind the wheel. You want to get out, drink some whisky and ale, relax, and take it all in.

A trip through the Netherlands is another great shout. Great country. Visit Belgium if you have time. I grew up there. Tremendous selection of local beer. And chocolate.

You grew up in Belgium?

My neighbor growing up was a Belgian war bride. She was my baby sitter, I got out of school an hr. before my parents got home and would sit with her for an hr.

She had 7 Chihuahua dogs, named after Belgian towns. Brussels, Antwerp, I forget the others. Lol.

She was fun, I think she was half drunk a lot. And she drank room temp. beer. She also wouldn't keep milk in the fridge so I always drank water there.

Never could figure out the warm drink thing, is that something they just do there?

Yep, grew up in Brussels. Great city. It was fun being a teenager there.

I'm not sure about the warm drink thing, although the Belgians love a 60:40 beer to head ratio, and they 'sweep' the head off the top of the glass into a drip tray with a little pallet. They also like to drink out of glass boots, or the famous 'chevalier':

Not easy to drink from.

Was the milk unpasteurized? For sure, anything unpasteurized, particularly cheese, doesn't belong anywhere near a refrigerator. And everyone knows only heathens buy pasteurized cheese.

Prices even with shipping were reasonable, plus they had Bourbon brands that i couldn't get here. some retailers wouldn't ship the Everclear to my state though.

Our state store just started carrying this brand. I have to admit I thought this was their bourbon not the American Whiskey when I bought it, I just saw the 99 proof. Just under $40. Mixed reviews, probably try some today.
