Hello all you LED grinders! I am new to the DIY LED world and would like some advice. I made a compulsive purchase and acquired 8 strips (BXEB-L0560Z-35E2000-C-B3) I am trying to cover a 2'x 4' (8sqft) I was hoping to used 1" aluminium channel as a heatsink and attach the strips with thermal type adhesive tape. My question is about proper driver selection I would like to use a Meanwell but I am not quite sure what would be the right voltage/current setup. I definitely want this system dimmable but want max wattage potential of these strips. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you Project info! I used the calculator and came up with HLG-320H-24B as the option. This calculator is having wire everything in parallel is that the best way to get the most out of these strips or a series/parallel circuit be more effective in eficency.

yeah pure parallel circuit. sounds easy enough. That picture looks like service drops for 4 tiki huts but I understand the "single line" drawing

What size do you think the driver output cables are? My awg 18 next to them for size, red is the awg 18.

They don;t look too different in size, I thought the driver output wires were much thicker but they actually aren't so would it really be a problem to use wagos and awg18 to extend them?20171120_005402.jpg

From what I've seen a lot of ppl use wago or those ip67 black waterproof connectors

And yeah it's by to use 18awg solid core hookup wire or thermostat wire is same shit

Ok sweet, I already have some 2 pole wago's so that's good. Thanks man! WIll save me some time now that I dontr have to buy an new wires and can use the awg18... That was all that was stopping me testing so will test tonight when I finish work!

Do you guys think a 3a wall plug will siffuce to attach to the driver or should I used 13a?

Whatever fuse you pick will have a datasheet.

You read it by looking to see how much current it will take to blow the fuse in a set amount of time.

Lets say you have a 6A fuse (first line on the left), you want to see how much it would take to trip the fuse in 0.1 sec.
Find 0.1 on the left and follow it to the line representing the chosen fuse. where it intersects you read the value off the bottom axis. In this case 36A.

Thanks for this! I will admit that it is pretty tricky to get my head around however.. I don't want to pick a fuse that is too big as I have read that the wire may well melt before the fuse blows...

I think it is my understanding of my driver that is lacking, if i'm using a HLG-60H-24a (2.5A) then am I right in thinking that the a 6a fuse would be much too big? Therefore the 3a fuse I have would be the best option?

50' of AWG18 can carry 10A (we are not talking about quick transient spikes)
Look at the datasheet for your driver... There is a transient inrush current of up to 70A
INRUSH CURRENT COLD START 70A/230VAC
SETUP, RISE TIME Note.8 1500ms, 80ms / 115VAC at full load 1000ms, 80ms / 230VAC at full load
Note 8. Length of set up time is measured at cold first start. Turning ON/OFF the power supply may lead to increase of the set up time

The way we deal with inrush currents is slow blow fuses (They have a T stamped next to the rating )

You could try a T 3amp fuse, it working will depend on the real-life startup pulse width.
When something actually goes wrong and there is a short circuit, you have current running over a near 0 resistance. SO you have "infinity amps running (not really of course, but even big fuses get tripped when you short them hard enough for long enough.)

If you are scared of your electrician's skills, you can just take the plug off an incandescent desk lamp and wire it in series with one of the incoming AC wires.
If all is well, it will have an initial flash, and then be lit dimly, unless something is wrong, then it will light up acting as a current limmiter, giving you time to power down before the magic smoke escapes.

Gen 2 EB strips are on Digikey Canada. Looks like a price drop for all gen 1 and gen 2. 1120mm gen 1 strips were about $19, now they are listed at $14. No stock listed yet....

Ooops, there is no price drop. I had it set on US dollars instead of Canadian bongsmilie
Actually the strips are NOT avaible (ETA 12/19/17), just listed and ONLY 3500K + 5000K, but the price dropped a little bit a while back. I had to get 14 strips to reach 50€, now I had to buy 15 strips, to come over 50€. I think it was like 3,80€ and now its 3,55€ (-7%) for the 1ft strips gen1.

Right, I did say they were not in stock yet but on the website. The price on the Gen 2 are slightly cheaper than Gen 1 so we will likely see a decent price drop in Gen 1 coming soon if anybody cares. Also, they are showing 3000K, 3500, 4000K, 5000K and 5700K.

planning to order some bridgelux eb gen series 2 tonight , noticed for the 3000 + 5000 minimum order is 1 pc each while the others are all 100 each ... looks like just 3000 + 5000 for me.

But you can already pre-order them. I have paid, and waiting for shipping now.

And yes, I also think, that they will only stock 3500K and 5000K, either because there are so many gen1 left, or because gen1 sold badly, and they don‘t want to stock so much again. My guess..

I spoke with a rep today. I could have ordered any spectrum from 3000K up to 5700K today. Of course there's a waiting period because they aren't in stock yet. They have all those spectrums on the site although some have different minimum quantity requirements at this time. I highly doubt they have too many of any strip left, they order them as they need them to fill their quotas. They have less than 50 of almost every spectrum of Gen 1 1120mm strips except for 3500K which they have 120 or so.

Yes i will b pre ordering the gen2 is what I meant , I ordered some gen1 to play with while I wait , plan to follow Daniels setup with 4fts for cost, simplicity and ease without worrying too much about the specs , came from 1000w hps all day so can’t complain.
