Question about roots!

Hello all! Quick question, i have discovered that my plants roots have completely came out of the bottom of my pot. I have my pot in a basin, so they are contained in that. But the pot is kinda sitting on them, should i trim them or just let them be? Also, after i water, the water runs into the basin (so it does not go on the floor), should i worry about root rot? i haven't had any problems with that yet, the roots looked beautiful and i usually empty the water filled basin every 3-4 days. Or should i just leave the water in there and just let her absorb/drink that water?

Thanks!
Chris

You don't want your pots to sit in runoff water. That can create all sorts of problems. The roots are coming out of the pots because of that. Once you start cleaning up the runoff the roots will prune themselves.

Thank you very much for the reply! This is the set up i have now, to help the "runoff" water from getting on my floor, i cant really think of anything else. unfortunately Does anyone have any other idea?
Just drain it after, simple. If you have 1 extra one of those foil dishes then swap them as you drain the runoff so you don't have to put the pots on carpet.

*facepalm* Not sure why i didnt think of that lol Thanks again! One last question for you, if you dont mind. You said the roots will prune themselves, does that mean they will get shorter on their own, or what? Sorry!

once there is no water they will dry up and cut back to the pot where it is moist.

You can use a turkey baster to suck the water up out of there. I usually check the ppm of the runoff from the first cup I fill.
Very good idea! Will definitely give that a try! Its kinda a pain in the butt changing the water basin out (which is why i do it every few days lol), but i will give this a shot too! Thanks for the reply!

quit watering with so much run off. water when pot is dry and light, and only 1/4th the soil volume.
two gallon pots need 1 quart of water when soil is dry to the bottom. practice this and you'll end your run off woes.
never let pots sit in water, never unless the water is aerated full time.

With bottled nutes not watering to good runoff will result in salt buildup and an acidic unbalanced medium eventually.

true, but he said nothing of bottled nutrients or feeding, he has stagnant water sitting for 3/4 days at a time between waterings, and that is too much watering. alternatively he could be using perlite to grow in too, in which case run off would be unavoidable, but I'm just being a smart ass now ...
