If it hasn't already been said...sage, rosemary, parsley, thyme, any mint like spearmint, if you want color than annual vinca, zinnias...I can think of a hundred plants that'll grow well in containers and won't be eattin by critters.

Not a food plant but useful nonetheless. Aloe Vera , I use it as a cloning gel. I have friends who use it on skin too. It's also quite easy to grow.
