The yellowing leaves are a good sign, the plant is using energy stored in the bottom leafs to create roots. Do not take the leafs off as they are essential in the production of roots.

Last year I used a topping technique. Yeild was small due to larger number of colas. This year I did not top and most of my plants have 3+ colas. I agree that this technique works however I believe that the plant will form other colas without the use of a topping technique.
