    The Dons' Organic Garden

Hi DonT, You don't know me. I'm a friend of fumble. Merry Xmas and HappyNewYear, hun [fumble -- Don, I don't know you well enough to call "hun" HaHaHa]. I garden in southern AZ. Worms are up in the garden now. They kinda disappear during the warm months. I biochar, make compost from weeds...

    post your cactus pics

Hey Danny, Fish Fish, you know me from elsewhere Looks like a cool job, Danny I like how the euphorbs blur the cacti-leafed plant line. Are you dealing with perennials exclusively? There's some interesting annuals that fit the "arid lands" bill

From scratch only! No premixed bottles of "stuff"

nice I live in the desert. It is interesting that something such as a cacti needs a nurse plant/shade when they are babies. Do you need to be careful with those?

    Mohican's 2016 Season

Hi Mo, Maku [the remains] is showing sign of some color. The underside of the sugar leaves is getting purple/red. Some cooler weather on us. Seasonable -- low 80's and 40-50` in the AM. Everyone should be in come the full moon. Sooner if the hoppers have their way. again...very nice smoke...

Advice for growing in shitty, dry soil

I am in the "building process" myself. This place required a digging bar to punch a hole. 2 inches of loose stuff...sand. Then rocks. Then caliche... then, I might get lucky and get some red clay. By the time I kick the rock out of the dirt, I lose 1/3 of the volume. The original owner brought...

Advice for growing in shitty, dry soil

sorry... I misunderstood the OP Yes lots of humus. If your soil is sandy...I'm sorry for you If you are growing melons, fine... but, it is a fight to keep things watered. I found a soaker hose useful. For compacted soil... clay needs some sand in addition to the standard humus/compost. If...

From scratch only! No premixed bottles of "stuff"

fish frames = fish skeletons I have a nice Troy bilt 8HP.. Worthless on this virgin soil. And it just sinks in my prepared areas. some of my best gardens started with red clay. Great stuff, once you get it loosened up. Until then, no good for root crops... but is fine for corn and tomatoes...

From scratch only! No premixed bottles of "stuff"

Thanks If I had a backhoe... French intensive would have been done. Fish frames and guts will get into the mix this coming year. Our "lake" dried up a couple years ago, and has got decent size bluegills again, now.

    Mohican's 2016 Season

Hi Mo, She made a good run... but the grasshoppers dictated taking Maku down. I left a couple lower branches, in hope they will be left alone or small enough for me to "screen" them out. The only "good" thing, they don't eat the flowers. They crawl up the stems, gnawing bark off as they go...

From scratch only! No premixed bottles of "stuff"

Oh.. I'm an old hand. I live out in the country. I have ready access to all kinds. Horse, cow, bat, chicken... . And you should get paid to clean stalls/corrals HeHeHe beetle grubs take place of worms in the compost heap. Big... BIG ones as thick as your index finger. I sift my compost before...

From scratch only! No premixed bottles of "stuff"

I guess it could be compacted... I live on top of a little knoll and I see a large chunk of decomposing shale sticking out of the ground just outside the "garden"... that chunk... I presume to be bedrock... If I was choose a place for a garden... this would NOT be it. it's coming around. I knew...

From scratch only! No premixed bottles of "stuff"

thanks for the hints. I laugh about getting rid of the rocks...There is [honestly] more rock than soil. I have to start the the sites with a digging bar. Shovel is only good afterwards. I broke down and actually bought something for the garden.... a bale of alfalfa.. Up to now, organic matter...

Advice for growing in shitty, dry soil

I have had some luck in dry ass country. Our annual rainfall is less than 20 in. And have had volunteers make it w/o help. I don't know where you are... Are there are plants [weeds] that grow around there that have the same basic needs as mj?...I use pigweed as an "indicator species" . I put my...

From scratch only! No premixed bottles of "stuff"

I make biochar from coals from my stove. Maybe I am oversimplifying it... I sift the the charcoal from the ashes when I clean the woodstove. Metate and mano grind it down to size. I will add a little ash after, if I want. I am building soil from scratch. I have about 6 inches of any kind of...

    Mohican's 2016 Season

that is some nice looking bud I took a cut from Maku last week. It is dry enough to smoke, but just barely. I have it packed for curing. Coming very nice. It smells and taste sorta like PineSol. "Up" meds. Very social. Talk and laugh and just feel good happy stuff. Still have half the plant on...

    Mohican's 2016 Season

Hi Mo, Wish I could post some pics. She is starting to get a wee bit of red on the tips of some of the calyx. She kinda looks like a weeping willow. I had to cut the mainstem, at 6 ft, just as she was coming into flower ....getting too big/tall. I took a piece a couple week ago....It is good...

    Mohican's 2016 Season

Hi Mo Just stopped in to give a little progress report on Maku. She still shows no sign of amber. The long single leaves on the buds are starting to yellow at the very tips. 'scuse... I think I just drank a fly in my coffee... where was I ???? am thinking of cutting a little off the branch...

    Mohican's 2016 Season

Hi Mo Nice!. those crimson flowers look like something I have. They make the whole plant look dark. was gonna ask if you see growth spurts toward the end of the season? I typically see it and am wondering if it coincides with moon phase. oh... Maku is still chugging along. Starting to look...
