making a water trap with reservoir this is the way i would go . but if you have to hump water ide say get a alice pack frame with straps and kidney belt rig it up so you can secure a j can to it and should be good to go just remember that 5 gals is about 45lb plus equipment.

look for well beaten paths its a sure sine of the two legged kind in the area. could always clean a spot to see if fresh traffic is around. town office has records of who owns the land you are looking at. internet can only go so far, you will have to put in grunt work to be sure of what is there...
