10w LED bulb vs 23w CFL bulb.

Hello.I recently read a lenghty thread on another forum about removing the diffusers from home LED bulbs and how that really increased the brightness of the bulb because its not being diffused and its more concentrated. So I tried that , I have a 23w cfl bulb and a 10w LED bulb without the diffusred , the led bulb is rated at 800lumens and the cfl around 1650.First thing I noticed , the led bulb without the diffuser is like twice as bright as the cfl bulb.I have my plants both 3-4 cm below the bulbs , one plant is directly under the led and on is under the cfl with just slight light from the led hitting it.I will try to keep them this way and see which bulb performs better. The plants are both the same age (broke the soil at the same time) , 11 days , they are both bagseed from the same bag.For some reason the plant under the led has shorter and wider leaves and the one under the cfl has longer thinner leaves.I don't know if the bulbs have anything to do with that though. Both bulbs are 2700k.
I will keep this thread updated once or twice a week if someone finds it interesting.

The experiment is flawed. You said the plant is getting slight light hitting the other.
I believe the difference in the leaves is that the wider leaves is predominantly indica.
The skinny leaves are predominantly sativa.
Not trying to be a smart ass. Just giving my opinion on the situation.

well I cant have 2 boxes. Almsot all of the light from the led is concentrated on 1 plant , like half a leaf from the other plant is getting slight light. Its not perfect but I think it would still be enough of a difference to get some results.

So what lighting are you about to switch to for these? They're about due for. Some lighting increase. They look really good though, besides the odd area of the pot they were planted in lol.

Commercial LED retrofit bulbs are getting really good. I usually run a 20W (1100lm) spiral CFL in my kitchen, anyway it popped again,as they do).
Then, saw a 5W LED bulb for like 2 dollars, It claims only +-500lm, but it seems every bit as bright.

Yes I really think they are better than cfls.CFL's are slightly cheaper but they put out more heat (well atleast comparing a 23w cfl vs a 10w led) , cfl's also are spreading the light 360 degrees and after removing the diffuser from the led its just 12 little leds all pointing down and its 2-3 times brighter than the cfl.I will link an interesting thread where a guy was messuring the light output of a led and cfl at different distances from a light meter, he also started making grow journals comparing his cfl grows with leds which are one third the wattage of his cfls and he got slightly better results (for 1/3 the wattage).

Not switching lighting lol. I'm gonna keep them under this , I have 0 budget , next paycheck I'm ordering a 100w led from a guy I know who has been growing for a couple of years and he is going to build it for me.They are in that area of the pot because I buried down the stretched stems :D I just bent them over horizontally and buried the stems.

Okay so its day 15 ,gave them their first feeding yesterday with 10-4-6 full dosage not seeing any nute burn so its ok I think.Next set of pics after a couple of days are gonna be with LST done to the cfl one because its kind of getting too tall for my PC box , the led one is just gonna be fan leaves tucked under so the lower nodes get taller.she is too bushy and I'm afraid of bending her.

A small update , the cfl plant is showing preflowers with tiny lil' pistils , I'm not confirminng it 100% female yet because I had a hermie from this bag (without stressing it) , the led plant hasn't showed any preflowers yet.

I did a grow 2 years ago using an assortment of 10 watt LED bulbs but I did not modify the bulbs...link below if you are interested

https://www.rollitup.org/t/cfl-or-led-bulbs-for-veg-room.864249/

At first I thought LED bulbs were not as productive as 23 watt CFL's but really the 10 watt LED is more equivalent to the 13 watt CFL

13 watt CFL bulbs (60w eqv) range from 810 lumens (mini-twister) to 840 lumens (spiral A-line)

10 watt LED bulbs (60w eqv) range from 800 to 815 lumens.

I've since bought 100 watt equivalent LED bulbs as the price has become more reasonable now.

I like to mix both CFL & LED bulbs during the cold winter months to keep the room warm enough, but in the warmer weather I'll just use the LED bulbs

They looked quite nice , but removing the plastic dome from the led bulbs really makes a difference , if you are still running a led/cfl setup try it.

Yeah I got an experimental led grow up with 100w equivalent LEDs and the outdoor led spot lights that are blinding.

Plants seem to be growing well and fast.

The 100w puts out 1600 lumens, the spots are 900 but brighter due to focused reflector.

I like it but wouldn't commit to a19 style only because, low price cob 100 watt chips are like 2-3 bucks each and a power supply is 25$ (thanks @nfhiggs for links). So now 32 chip Cob setups become cheap to test.

Kinda rambling but it's in there. :-)

whaaaaaaaaat insane prices man can you please link me the chip and driver. Here its gonna cost me about 90-100$ for a DIY led 100w cob.

I'm using 20w 2560 lumen 4000K LED spots and they're A LOT better than the 36w CFLs I was using before. The high lumen LEDs are still pretty expensive, but hobbies cost money.

6500K CFLs give the plants a frostier look, but I haven't tried 6500K LED spots, I think the minimal amount of UV coming from the CFLs is beneficial.

Do you have a grow log or something , I was wondering about 4000k spots and how they would work .

day 30 , cfl plant was gutted , the hermaphrodism was just too ugly for me to handle , LED plant is confirmed female , it has almost recovered from a Mg deficiency , has slight nute burn but I think its looking good.
Looks good man. Watch out for that nute burn on the new growth. How many spots leds do you have on it?
