150 watt HPS for sprouting a seed.

I've been having problems even sprouting a seed from soil after germinating. I think it may have been because I couldn't ventilate well under the CFLs when they were so close to the soil. Anyways I'm gonna try sprouting under the 150 watt HPS.

How far away should they be from the HPS?

Is it okay to put a germinated seedling in FF ocean forest to start with, or is that soil too full of nutes?

I'm damn depressed after my latest failing which I thought would be foolproof. I had a germinated seedling in soaked rockwool under a 27 watt 6500 k CFL about two inches away, which a tiny desk fan blowing air between the light and rockwool to keep it cool. Could this tiny breeze be enough to stop it from sprouting?

putyour seedling in a dome or if u wanna use the hps keep it about two feet from the top its gonna strecth tho and u can use ff soil from start to finish

You don't need the cfls that close when the seeds are just sprouting they don't have a large root system to supply the plant with water and nutrients from soil when they've just poped up try 6-10" next time take care of strech at first transplant:) and yes 2 feet with the HPS, you can lower cfls after first week or so once it has some roots

Sprouts don't need a lot of light. Too much light at such a young, tender age can damage the plant. I sprout under a 23 w cfl or a 40 w tube. They really don't need a lot of light until they get they're first true leaves.

FF Ocean Forest is a very rich soil. Seedlings don't need any nutrients for the first week or two and then they only need a mild nutrient solution. Ocean Forest is best for plants with established root systems. I'd suggest FF Light Warrior for starting seeds. It's easy for young roots to penetrate, wont burn your plants and has mycorrhizal fungi for root development.

Also the fan you have blowing on your seedlings could be drying them out. They don't really need a whole lot of air until they get they''re first true leaves (with stomata).

Hope this helps.

Peace

FF Ocean Forest is completely organic and is not a "hot" soil. It will not burn your plants. Ocean Forest is the best for any stage of the plants life.

Young seedlings don't have the root system to utilize such a rich soil, organic or not. Light warrior is best for establishing that root system. Can a seedling grow in FFOF, of course but I wouldn't say it's the best.

Thanks guys.

so I probably killed them by drying them out with the CFL too close and the fan on the rockwool. I was under the impression CFls were pretty useless unless very close, but apparently not when it comes to sprouting.

I'll probably try CFLs again.

man?!? if you can't sprout a seed under a flo light then your definitely not going to be able to do it under a hps... its so easy though you should be able to do it.. I germinate my seeds for 12 hours on my monitor (wherever its warm) and they germinate, stick it in good soil with the root down and its sprouted in another 12 hours.... naw I mean??

Bullshit-So what if its organic? So is chicken manure and itll burn the SHIT out of your plants if you use too much. Why do people equate something being organic to being completely safe for whatever stage of a plants life??FFOF is some of the best soil-but certain strains cannot handle it at the seedling stage-(personally burnt white widow and ak47seedlings going straight into FFOF.)Try light warrior-have never burnt another seedling.(I transplant into straight FFOF when theyre about 7 inches)
