2 footer. to late to top?

living in the Northeast PA i hear plants start to flower around mid aug just wondering if my 2 foot plant is to late to top or will it stress it out?

now is the perfect time to top. doing so will greatly increase the outward growth. more fuller heads of flowers will be the ultimate effect.
