24 hrs of darkness before flipping to 12/12

It is far red light that helps speed flowering not darkness.

The darkness myth is about more trichomes at the end of flowering like said and ignored above.

The only thing it does do was also mentioned above. It allows the carbs in the plant to return to the roots. Good for better flavor earlier in n cure.
Flowering is initiated by florigen which builds up in darkness and is destroyed by light. The plant starts flowering when the nights are long enough to reach the strains particular threshold a few nights in a row. Doing that initial extended period of darkness skips the transition phase. The Emerson effect is important too but it's a different mechanic.

I didnr bother reading all the theory, i have found that initiating flower with a 24-36 hr dark cycle will make things stretch less, set things up tighter, i dont do it unless i have a reason, say i veged to long and the height will get me trimming to much shit off the bottom. No problems with it and its just another tool a decent grower has, like shmoejoe said it just creates a quicker build up of the hormones for flowering. Do some experimenting folks , it wont hurt nothing

I was pretty sure that it is a myth that extended darkness does what’s you are saying but I will look back into it because of your explanation.

Got any links to support this?

I do it
No facts to back it but i have been doing it for while.

I also do 24 hrs dark when i cut and i cut in the dark lol
I've never done a proper side by side comparison because I have no way to keep all other variables equal but I've done strains that I've grown for years and know inside out both ways and the ones that I start that way stretch less and start stacking pistols earlier.

I always did it cause it was in the old grow bibles i think or an article from high times when i was young

Honestly if you just do a search for florigen you'll find tons of literature on it.

It’s actually the phytochrome receptors converting pfr730 to pfr660 that initiates flower. Florigen is still a hypothesis I thought.

But other plants are manipulated with light duration and bursts in the greenhouse industry so it is possible that the extended darkness gives a stronger signal to flower.

I am not finding any actual proof of this and hoped someone else has.

Your explanation of Florigen being destroyed in the light is not correct. It is the conversion of the photo receptors controlling things and making the plant produce or not produce hormones.

Well, I never tried it before, and this was the only time I’ve seen pistils 4 days from flip. The other 2 times took 5-7 days to see any.

I got my wires crossed. You may or may not believe it but I had first wrote phytochrome and edited it to say florigen. It turns out we're both right on key points though. There are two forms of phytochrome and darkness and exposure to light convert them back and forth triggering flowering when the nights are long enough. Not quite actually destroying it but it's near enough that it's almost a matter of semantics. I found an article that explains it really well but I just got a new phone and can't figure out how to post the link.

Like others have said it can speed up transition time, however ime its better to do a slower decrease in hours if you want max yield, like in nature. Youll notice that the plant slows down its growing if you do the 24 hours darkness, and it shoots up with a quickness with a natural transition. Its nothing major no matter how to do it an its preferance, just a tool in the box.

I have been reading about this some today and I am still not sure cannabis responds just to extended darkness like poinsettias but am finding that far red light does do what the darkness is supposed to.

A couple of days either way does not prove much without many repeated results. Too many variables in my opinion. I have had identical clones flower at different times even though I thought they grew the same.

How mature are the plants. You mean real blooming pistils not preflower pistils right?

I run perpetual with new plants in and harvested ones out so I can’t turn the lights off and the fastest bloom I have seen is just under 2 weeks.

I may run a test run in veg to see for myself. I really thought this was proven a myth.

Not arguing as I am not sure as I thought about this but vegging plants longer always keeps the stretch down in my experience. Mature plants flower better in general.

I tested this several times and got the same results. I believe the idea of flowering hormone produced in darkness holds true from everything ive seen. I dont know that it benifits final yield, just may get you to the end faster. Theres lots of small tweaks you can do to speed things up that dont help your final yield tho, such as reduced light hours, smaller containers, pots vs in ground when outside bla bla bla
