4 gallon rubbermaid -- is it big enough?

I have a 4-gallon tub that I picked up for cheap that fits perfectly in my cab. I was thinking of converting it into a DWC res. I was wondering, however, if it was large enough. It is going to hold 2 plants, and it is 7" deep. Is this large enough to do a DWC, or would I be wasting my time?

No time growing is wasted, even if you fail you'll learn something. That being said I think you'll be fine for two plants. Put them in opposite corners if possible.

with all do respect, with everyday of growing I risk my neck of being found out, so I would rather get a harvest than fail, and anytime not spent managing a harvestable crop is basically wasted, IMO.

That being said, thank you very much for your advice and your words are well taken. I am going to try to learn as much as possible throughout the growing cycle, and your advice has influenced my overall design.

i beleve it should be fine for two plants i have dwc 4-gal. also but not quite as deep and my 2 plants r doing good! but i would clone a branch as soon as you could and sex it to see if male or female you never waste time when its female you know?

Yeah, I'm going to be using guaranteed female clones available from my dispensary (MMJ patient here).

If I have it right, I will place my clone (rockwool and all) into a net pot an cover it with expanded clay (could vermiculite work??) and then raise the water level to the bottom of the pot until I see roots. I would lower the water level slowly until it is 1" beneath the net pot.

*loaded question* what nutes would you suggest to someone who isn't all too familiar with hydro...and, even more basic, how does one use nutes (adding/mixing/measuring)?

i personaly would use rockwool or stonewool but its really what you feel most confertable with and what you have suceeded with in the past! i like useing the flora 3 part nute. system its really simple and it has an aplacation table on the back of the bottles so you know how much to add!

Hey-
I was using a small res for for the first 3 or 4 weeks but found that the plants were sucking up so much water it was hard to keep the PH and nutes stable in such a small res. I moved up to a 10 gallon tote that hold about 6.5-7 gallons with 4" net pots. My ph no longer bounces and my 2 plants love it.

Good luck.

Hey, I have an 8 liter reservoir and I'm having the same issues with pH. It's all over the place. My larger tank has no issues (20 liter). I'm probably going to ditch the thing once real root growth has gone down.

Waaaaaay too small for 2 plants. Even if they are in opposite corners they will grow into each other. If you can get clines locally with your mmj card just get one and either mother it and find somewhere else to flower clones later or just get one at a time and flower in there, harvest and have another on ready to go in there after. I mean it's your deal do what you want but if your set on using the 4 gal I wouldn't put more than one in it. Target has perfect size 10 gal for $5
