hello all, first post long time reader
this is really the first time I needed personalized advise so here I am.
new grow room needs new lighting.
contenders
3) 315w cmh
fixtures + bulbs = $600
vs.
DIY COB
contents unknown
Price unknown

so room is 4x8 with 80" ceiling
can cob's even be done to be as good or better then the cmh at this price?
if so what are the recommendations? I am handy and will definitely make my own "rack/fixture" I have experience with electrical but almost no ne with leds. any help from actual cob builders?

You won't be able to adequately cover a 4x8 with that budget. What you can do is cover half of it now and half later, when you can afford a second fixture. Keep running CMH over the other half for the time being. That's what I'd do.

I am not sure 3 - 315 w LECs will match 2 HPS 1000 for that 4x8. I know that size very well Also I would be surprised that you can get a decent LEC for $200. I know prices have come down but just the Phillips bulbs are about $70 at the cheapest.

20 Samsung F-series strips - $468
4 Meanwell LRS-200-48 200 watt power supplies - $102
No heatsinks needed, only a frame, which you can make from aluminum L channel.

800W of the most efficient LED light you will find for under $600

Edit: Bump it up to 25 strips and 5 power supplies and you're at 1000W for under $650

not happening.. it runs me like 650 per 4x4 with luminus cobs. Thats getting close to maxing ppfd at 1k but still.. i dunno if you can match the output of 3x CMH for 600$ in led
