Hi guys,

First time posting a grow journal but I've been a big fan of RollItUp for a long time. I chose VK to model one of my favorite grow journals, Dayzt's Waterfarm VK + AOS scrog grow. I'm receiving my seeds either today, Monday or Tuesday, just doing double checks on my equipment and set-up, doing temp readings and stocking up on distilled water.

I'm not really sure but does anyone know what the average humidity people start in an indoor dwc? Mine's really low right now, like 25-30% on average.

Well, enough with that, time to actually detail my room.

The AREA

I'm using a 4' x 8' x 6' tent.

The Equipment

  • 4 - 3 1/2 Gallon Buckets
  • 8 - 1/2" grommets
  • 8 - 1/2" elbows
  • 20' of 1/2" blue tubing
  • 4' of 1/2" black tubing
  • 30' of 1/4" black tubing
  • Hydroton
  • 1000W Quantum ballast + Digilux HPS & Digilux MH
  • 8" ducting
  • 735 cfm fan to vent air through the hood
  • 10" clip-on fan
  • 16" pedestal fan
  • Distilled water from the store
  • Hanna Combo Pen Meter
  • Sunleaves Easy 02 Air Pump to power 4 buckets

The Nutes
I am going with the Lucas formula modded with hygrozyme and cal/mag+ because I will not use his full strength nutes formula. I will be using .7 TDS Conversion to explain my ppms.
  • GH Micro
  • GH Bloom
  • Hygrozyme
  • General Organics Ca/MG+

If anyone could answer my question on humidity it would be much appreciated :D

Feel free to comment

Alright, seems like I made a mistake and I got my Sour Lemon OG from Emerald Triangle germinating right now, should have pictures of the beans put into rockwool and the system by tomorrow night hopefully. Fixed the humidity problem too.

Hey i grow DWC too, here to watch your grow! I like comparing higher wattages to my own.

Hey RL420, glad to see someone's on board, make yourself at home :D

But down to the nitty gritty,

Germinated for 24 hours with the paper towel method, distilled water, 5 PPM 5.4 PH 68 degrees fahrenheit, kept the room temp to an average 74 degrees but I was germinating in my oven and tried to make it warmer, ended up baking my seeds at 150 degrees for about 2 minutes, hoping it didn't do too much damage, 2 showed a bit of taproot, the other 4 are still germing.

Pre-soaked the rockwool with 5.1ph 69 degree water with 2 ml of hygrozyme/gallon and let it sit for about 30 minutes, shook the cubes, and put the 2 germed seeds into it, about 1/2" into it, and put it in the setup.

Soaked the hydroton with distilled water, with 2ml of hygrozyme/gallon solution. The res right now for all of them is at about 300ppm (1ml GH Micro / gallon, 2ml GH Bloom / gallon, 4 ml of hygrozyme / gallon), 69 degrees, 5.2 ph, though I doubt the roots will reach there for another day or two.

Room temp: A constant 76 degrees fahrenheit with 1 or 2 degree fluctuations.
Room humidity: 35-40%
Light: 750W Digilux M.H. Bulb (1000W but dimmed 75%)

I know alot of growers prefer not starting under HID and going 24 hour lighting schedule with fluoros or cfl's, however, I'm starting this under the dimmed MH, lights are about 3' away to ease the intensity, and I'm starting 18/6 right away.

This grow has officially started, DAY 1

Day 6 since germ

It seems that the accidental baking of my seeds caused 4/5 of the sour lemon og to die, so I have one salvaged and thankfully my VK came just in time.

The sour lemon og is still fighting to sprout, but 1 of the VK has already started to show signs of life. Day 3 since germ/rockwool.

Here's some numbers for the people out there wanting specifics:

Day 1-3:
Started on 18/6 cycle from germ

Max Light on Temp: 81 degrees F
Min Light on Temp: 75.6 degrees F
Light off temp: 67.7 degrees F

Rockwool solution:
40 ppm (few drops of hygrozyme/Gallon)
5.2 ph (submerged the rockwool in water, waited for a bit, then ph adjusted everything to 5.2)
67 degree water (when submerged)

Res solution:
350 ppm (lucas formule half strength with 4ml/gal hygrozyme)
65 - 74 degrees res temp (when it hits around 74 I drop a mini frozen water bottle and it evens out to 65-67 steady)

Lights:
1000W Digilux MH suspended 22" above the netpots

Whoo, excited about the first sign of life, now moving on from the most boring part to the second most boring part of this show.

P.S.: The pictures are from right before lights off and right after lights on, I'm stunned with the vigor the VK is showing, Dayzt wasn't joking when he said this was a good breed.2013-01-29 09.54.49.jpg2013-01-29 18.35.14.jpg

How long do you plan to veg don't you think it is going to take a while to fill out that 8x8 tent with only 4 plants? I'm sure it will come out dank and have a ce yield just kind of a lot of time to spend on veg time.

Hey doubletake,

Yeah, I'm not planning to take up the full 4x8, just a 4x4 space for this one, I just have a tent for the possibility of expanding this at a later point in time, plus I'm not sure how this tent will balance out with 2 1k in here, I'm probably going to make a separate 4x4 tent to veg and hold mothers, switch out the 1k in here to there, and put up 2x600W, but we'll see how it goes.

But to fully answer your question, to get my 4x4 filled up I'm planning on vegging for ~5 weeks, but it really depends on what the plants want, and if my screen gets filled up unexpectedly fast or slow. I'll be putting it up later.

About to hit lights off to close off day 4 for the VK, day 7 for the Sour Lemon OG, and when lights go back on I'm going to put in the rest of the VK.

Here's the pic of the emerging sprout after 16 1/2 hrs from the last pic.

Oo nice I get you if you could mabey in the future go 2 1000s in the 4x8 and like 400 watt mh for the 4x4 veg tent, well cool man I'm along for the ride good luck with it.

Hey guys,

Well had a problem today so I thought I should post.

The VK sprout was leaning like crazy toward the light source, apparently 22" away with a 1000w is still not sufficient for it, so I brought it closer to 15" hoping that will fix the problem.

Could also be an issue with not finding the water source and being dry but I thought it would be safe to try the light method first, leaves are still green, just stretching pretty much.

Opinions appreciated

im growing vk right now in a scrog and had the same stretch issues when it was young. All i ended up doing was putting a cfl right up to it until it grew its second set of leaves and then switched to my 600w MH. They dont seem to like hids when they are young.

hey sudodaemon, thanks for dropping by!

Yeah, the problem pretty much fixed itself when the roots found the res, I think it was a problem with the HID drying the hydroton too fast mixed with my pure black buckets. I aluminum taped all my buckets, on different levels to see the difference, and moved the light up a little, moving it closer didn't really help too much. I also foliar fed till the roots found the res, since my humidity was on the low side as well.

Day 12 for the biggest vk
Day 9 for the other VK

PPM: 250 for the two small VK, ~520 for the big VK, looked like it was having a nitrogen deficiency so put some more micro in.
P.H. Kept around 5.1-6.2 (fluctuates throughout an 8-16 hour period)
Water temps kept around 70
Room temp: 78 lights on, 71-73 lights off
Humidity: 31%

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to start lst'ing by next week, but we'll see.

Well just before lights off today, I saw a tiny black bug of somekind running rapidly across my big VK, while trying to capture it to take a picture I accidentally knocked it off and it has yet to come back (2 hours).

Still, I was worried so before lights off I applied neem oil (mixed with a little bit of soap and lukewarm water), to all of my girls. A little pissed that I might be having a pest problem this early. It definitely wasn't an aphid with the speed it was moving, might have been a thrip or lice but I have no way to be absolutely sure. It was just one visible black bug running pretty fast, pretty sure it wasn't an ant either.

Anyone else have this problem before?

I'll do a full update with pics when lights come on

Thanks
