Pre germed and place in rapid rooter.

five gallon dwc.

8 in net pot lid

recycled tire mulch media. I use this often in ebb and flow and smaller net pots.

THE QUESTION. Is my rapid rooter going to be cherry in this system? I mean I have the water level high enough and a big air pump but I am wondering by the time the water gets to the rapid rooter through the 8 inches of media is their going to be any oxygenation left?

Does anybody have any experience with these huge lids? The media is like hydroton but prob not as much air by a degree. It works good in ebb and flow and small dwc net pots.

I ask cuz I put a clone in and it died. I expected it to live but it was a battered clone anyway. This seed is a fresh start.

I have used 12" rimmed bucket lids before with no problems. You may want to keep a spray bottle of water handy, and just spray your media to keep it moist until the roots breach the net pot.

I have the water level so high that it is already level with the rapid rooter. Is that ok? Or should I lower it so it is lower than the bottom of the netpot? That sounds interesting and oh crap if I need to do that. Right now the bucket is full.

Per the link below, adjust the water level AND bubble action so that the top of the RRis appropriately damp and not wet. Don't worry about oxygenation, the whole thing is hanging in air.

Indeed I have experience with large netcups I used 5" in a 3 plant 10 gallon rubbermaid and now use 10" netcups (I believe) they might be 8" but pretty sure they are 10s... Large netcups are the way to go for seeds, really let the plant grow a trunk and get a huge root system.... my 5 gals are basically full of root mass.

I use 2' diffusers and coil them then place them at the bottom of the 5 gal and use a magnetic air pump to get a good amount of air flow and it really works.

here is my grow using 5 gal buckets.

And the answer to your question is yes, if you have at least 3 watts of air (cheapest 1 outlet air pump you can buy) then you should have enough oxygen for it. Really tho you can just pull the rooter out and put it in 1/8" of water in a shallow dish (covered, preferably) and let the roots grow out of the starter plug before using DWC (that is what you should always do)...

The roots will grow in the unit already, but it could take longer and is kind of ridiculous to fill 3-5 gal of water/solution when you'll only need several ounces for the next week or two.

see, i think transplanting is ridiculous. why take all the extra steps when you can start them right in rockwool, right in the hydroton. I never understood why people take all the extra steps when you do not have to. i have had GREAT success starting seed RIGHT IN THE 8" net pot. In fact, I just started 3 more nirvana ice fem this morning in 5-gallon dwc with 8" net pots. I fill the 3 buckets up to where the water level is JUST above the bottom of the net pot and just spray them 2-3 times a day until the roots grow into the bucket. then i drop the water level by about an inch or so and leave it like that. don't listen to these people, they have no idea what they are talking about and your plan will work just fine. also, i do not give them nutrients or ANYTHING at all besides h202 mixed lightly into the spray bottle with RO water until the roots have grown into the bucket. i also place saran wrap over the net pot lids until the seeds have sprouted. makes it like a mini-greenhouse.
i also do not use anything organic or anything like super thrive, hygrozyme, hydro flush, aqua shield, etc, you re just BEGGING to have algae or pythium start up. follow the lucas formula exactly and add your own non-organic additives according to the manufacturer's instructions. a little h202 goes a long way as well with every single feeding. in fact, i add h202 everyday and would never grow without it again! peace.

This is an interesting thread and has answered a few questions I've had myself. I recently got a clone in a rapid rooter to start in a 7g DWC bucket to start my first foray into hydro. It had a small amount of roots growing out of the rapid rooter and when I placed it in my hydroton I just don't think the roots were long enough to reach anything so I raised the water level and the plant looks LOADS better. I also like the idea of spraying them too. I will give that a try.
