A civil debate?

Hey everybody, I've been browsing through the politics section on here a little bit, and feel like the same thing is happening here that's happening everywhere else. Petty arguments using generalization that systematically turns us against one another. The main point of this website is pretty self explanatory. If us stoners can't talk politics or sensitive social subjects without attacking others opinions and insulting each other than who on this earth can? I know I would probably clash politically over some issue with most members on here. But is anybody up to doing it in a civil manner? A real debate where we can share opinions and accept that we have different views without arguing and insulting each other?

George Washington warned about using a party system for the government. He said it would cause division amongst the people and turn us all against one another. And that's all it is now a days. Party affiliation means an automatic hate for someone based on a general platform. It's 'We the People' not 'We the Democrats/Republicans f**k those other guys'. That would be long and rude  And we are ALL the people, we are all equal. So feel free to come and disagree with me on any number of things. Let's just be cool about it :peace:

Nice screen name! :D

Subjects devolving into snarky backbiting is the nature of the beast in politics everywhere and until you can evolve the human race it looks like we're in for the long haul.

Keep trying though as those that herald an evolutionary shift are always anomalies!

i tried civilly/logically debating politics online in the early 2000's. by 2008 i was convinced republicans had their own "alternative facts" and were unable to understand the truth, common sense or logic anymore.

until we can agree on facts, there is no debate.

so naturally, insulting and demeaning your opponent is the only logical next step.

republicans are sorry people.

what's next?

Why, OF COURSE!

That's what every educational opportunity should be answered with!

How could people not want to be like you? ;)

I think the civil discussion with the gop as it stands today is futile. However, meaninginful discussion can be had with a conservative independent. Racism, putting party before country, hatred for the poor, etc does not have to go hand in hand with the beleif of small government and true laisse fair economics, etc. Now thats not me, but i can respectfully debate and discuss with someone like that, that is conservstive but does not beleive in nor aid and abeit this cult that has now become the gop... in fact that conservative independent and i for now must be political allies to preserve this great republic and her institutions so those institutions still exist at the end of this ride, so we can have those civil debates based on the same facts and compromise in good faith for the good of the whole...

when breitbart, drudge, hannity, rush, levin, jones, faux news and facebook are your primary sources of news, you're fucked in the head.
Seems a wide blanket to cast over a massive grouping of people on the behalf of a biased demographic, as below may demonstrate.

But he used the word "conservative" and that pulls too many a hair trigger these days. ;)

Let me take a stab at this -

You teach in a public school, correct?
Many religious people want to home school their kids if they can't afford private school. They want to shield them from scientific thought, from reason and logic that dispels religious dogma, from a young age. Now we have a third of Americans that can't think critically calling those that do indoctrinated. Hard to even call them hypocrites as any idea like hypocrisy or indoctrination is incomprehensible to them.

I think you're confusing common core for homeschooling.

You're saying that individuals over an entire nation the size of the US that home school are indoctrinating their young?

Again, a VERY wide blanket.

No wonder you think the way you do.

Most have to learn to critically think themselves if left to public resources.

I wonder how many in Baltimore are home schooled. ;)

You obviously have no idea what common core even is.

Some parents (try to) indoctrinate their children to help them suspend logic and hold irrational beliefs. I didn't say every homeschooled kid is indoctrinated. I also didn't say public education is perfect, only that the outcomes are better because of the scrutiny placed on the system.
