Active Fan Failures?

Curious on how many have has fans fail that led to a blown cobs? Been working on computers for awhile now and have had a couple fan's fail on me in the past 15 years and it was a 200mm top fan. And video card fans but those face downward also so same as top fan gravity plays a part.

Have 4 cxm-32 4k and 4 3618 4k that i want to crank.

Recommendation for heat sinks for these @100w+?

Doesn't look like it. Those have a diameter of 90mm whereas your fan is 120mm. Also it may be a pain to try and find a way of mounting a non-specific fan to it. If you find a Noctua that will fit it they are well worth the money. I have two lights, one with a Noctua and the other a Fractal Design. The Noctua hands down wins in the amount of air it moves.

Can these types of heat sinks take a standard 120mm fan?
Email mechatronix, they do extensive testing on the thermal loads for the sinks and will give you the max W for them.......follow the recommendations with your ambient temps given.

According to the datasheet the fan should last at least 60k hours.
So reliability shouldn't be a concern.


Both the CXM and Citizen cobs can take a case temp of 105 degrees.
If the fan fails the cobs will probably be fine even driven at 100W.

I got the 3618 for free looked up data sheet and was like 100v JESUS. So i guess 2 320 2800 drivers in parralel@1400ma should do those good. Finding a fan for those is going to be a bit tricky- guess i could make a bracket for them like an adapter plate. And $20+ for 1 120mm fan is just to much price wise i was thinking maybe

Funny thing is that they run at .10a which fits apv drivers perfectly.

Bearings in those help with gravity and fans pointed downward.

I have cxm-22 gen 3 but i really like the specs of the cxm-32 and they drive the same way. One thing i noticed with this gen 3 update with the luminus chips is the only big upgrade was the conversion from 36v to 50v for the cxm-22 other chips did not see a significant jump.

Liquid cooling is also a viable solution to pushing COBs hard. Might be something to consider. Also easier to get that heat out of your grow area and cut down on overall cooling costs.

Yepp,
and you will totally lose cooling capabillities when a fan fails and the COB will also fail more or less imediately.
Better do a modular passive set-up with a good pump and a big 3' x 2' radiator for hot-water room heaters. Thus radiators are 60$ at walmart, pump and tubes are another 20-30$ and 4 small waterblocks are available on ebay or alibaba for less than 30$.
There are only a few threads about watercooling COB's but with really great results.
BTW,
when you mount the radiator into another room you can use the heat also for other things. You can also get it out of the house and use the heat for heating your greenhouse or early beds, but in the case without radiator, but with hoses 10-20cm deep in the ground.

yesh ya thats a situation not a bad idea but lot of work. making a bracket for these close loop system would work but its all about getting it mounted up also. Fans shouldn't go out though per this post if it does it is very rare apparently. I will be doing a parallel fused circuit anyway if she pops it goes over 2amps and my fuses pop. safety safety safety piss me off if all cobs blew.
