Advantage V. disadvantage CFL's

For those who dont think CFL's work. They do. I've been using CFL's with success for almost three years and I grow 3 to 5ft tall plants. I bought them from this guy http://cfl-growlight.com/ before he had a web site. I wont say they are better than HiD or HPS but when used properly, they are as good. One thing I have not heard talked about on this thread is the USABLE lumen out put of CFL's VS HPS. It seems that thats what the old time HPS growers kinda hang their hat on..."A 1000w HPS has over 150k of lumen" While a 1000w equivalent CFL setup only has 16 -18.5k in lumen. Its seems clear whats better ...right? Until you look a little closer. The CFL has lower lumen but you plants can use 100% of it because its in the correct spectrum's while the HPS bulbs having all that almost useless lumen because most of it (87%!) is in spectrums completely unusable to plant life at all. Yes, thats right! A whopping 13% of the light emitted from HPS bulbs is usable to plants! The rest of it...you feel it in excess heat or wasted heat and energy. Anytime you plug something in and it produces heat when thats not your goal...its wasted energy, and in this case lumen.View attachment 1877317
This about the biggest load of bullshit I have ever heard about HPS lamps....LOL CFL's can work well, but you will NEVER get the same yeild as using a an HPS at the same wattage. I know for a fact because I have used them both.

what should I expect from a hood with 20 23 watt mixed spectrum on 3 plants? whats the most available space it will illuminate?

I agree cfls work
but thers nothing like hps or mh
ive grown plants side to side in diffrent grow rooms one with cfls other with hps/mh
and OFCOURSE hps came on top
i yeilded 3times the amount with hps than with cfl
cfls are good for veg
but to bloom u wont get much
Not to bag on cfls i still use cfl
But only to veg
just my 2cents

why do people always try saying hps and mh are hot my aircooled 1000w is always at 78 F but that is amazing you claim to get 42oz's with 18 cfl's every 4 months cause i only get about 32 every 2 months but if you only use 420-680 watts you pull about 2.8 grams per watt hats off to you thats the highest i've ever heard of

I bet he forgot to take the plant out of the pot. Made more sense...

This is the first time I grow, and I was quite afraid of getting HID lamps because of heat issues (only read, never tested one).
So now I have 190w of cfl for vegging raising temps to 80-85F while the ambient temperature is 70F.

I now have the courage (place's considered small) to buy a HPS, even more so because it's easier to keep cool than several seperate bulbs.

you see it seem to me that people feel that if you give it the most intense light you can find and the best hydro setup that it equils dank fat buds and that is simpley not true.


CFL's do not have the danger or heat problems that HPS and MH have also it cost more all around to dissapate the heat and the smell with it also CFL's are self ballest in most cases and there are so many that if one goes out you dont have to shell up 150.00 or 250.00 or what if the ballast goes out what if either of them fail while you are out of town and you loose the crop if one or two fail then i loose a few lumens and keep on rockin again consider the fire danger while you are gone a fan can fail of trip the braker also they use less wattage and you are able to spread the light as you see fit in most cases instead of coming from a central location high above i will say in defence of the production grower large intense lights are a good and usefull thing because it cuts down on the doliers per OZ of production that in my opinion is the onley time you would need the extra lumens i my self will never grow more then 14 plants at a time i get around 3-5 OZ per plant with that light at 14 plants only geting 3 OZ per is still 42 OZ every 4 months what the hell will i do with all that and i am only using about 420-680 watts when you have MH and HPS you are stuck with on or two kelvin ratings and that is it with CFL's i can swap the kelvin rating as i see fit mabey i want to flower at 2100 kelvin mabey i like 6500 kelvin for veg or mabey i want to try 4500 kelvin for veg and see if i get a better sun leaf with CFL's there is room for discovery and creativity we know that all strands are not the same and come from diffrent parts of the world mabey you would like to plant all dark purple indiga and the next crop you want to plant a virgin sativa they have diffrent requirments for light and with CFL's you can provide that with half the cost just remember people that the higher you go in watts when buyin a single CFL bulb the lower you go in lumens per watt stay at 26-55 watts and that is the best spot to stay...................... here are the periods that belong up there disperse them as you please

i have a grow at the min, im new to this forum and also new to growing. im in the uk and have 4 plants. there all sprouted and look healthy except the stems are a little long. i am currently using 2 CFL lights (spiral) 2700 k warm white and im using 2 of these. i am thinking of getting another 2 so each plant as there own light. i have been told and read online that you can do a full grow with just these CFL lights. is that right? if i get another 2 would they be ok on that light untill right to the end? would appreciate everyone input on it. :) thanks guys

oh and the i have 3 speed haze fem seeds that are now small stem plants and 1 pineapple gum seed which is the longest and is the fastest. germinated first the pineapple one :D

i am also using mylar silver and white reflective sheets all around my grow room so there getting light from that too. plus i also have a small fan blowing constantly. does it sound like im doing anything wrong so far? done loads of reading/research online and thats why im growing the way i am :) and so far its working

Well for all its worth, I veg with CFL and finish with HPS. The growth rate is definitely slower with CFL.Plus I top the plant and it slows down growing also.I have the time to wait for my veg to complete before putting it under 400 watts hps. Also keeps the better half happy with a lower electric bill during extended veg times I create. That way I'm guaranteed to achieve my max weight

the more wattage you can afford the better.

its discussable. of course there's nothing better than veg with HID and flow with HPS but if you (in my case) have lack of space there might be a issue with overheating. HPS are way better because they produce denser photon beams which means that the light will penetrate deeper into the buds, creating denser & compact buds (higher yield) . BUT 11band LED's, have incredible yield while these produce 50% less heat than HPS of =W its like CFL-->LED--> HPS best, while with CFL's you need to focus on distributing even light to all areas of the bud sites, this can be achieved with LTS or SCROG I don't support trimming unless it covers bud sited but with LTS or SCROG you don't have to worry about this, while you just maintain light about inch to the top of the plant which most of you already know. ill be using 200W 65k and 2x 25w 65k for vegg and 200w 27K and 2x 25w 65k for flow per plant (2 plant grow opp) check my set up

I have graduated from AS/A2 biology so no one can teach me about GMO or plant cycles etc...... fan leafs are most important in lifecycle of the plant these are vital plant organs for creating energy. if you trim too many leafs? --> less energy from the light will get absorbed= less energy produced---> lower yields + stubborn growth. But>> BIG>> but>> plants need all the energy to grow strong while at the end of flowering they don't need that much energy as the plant uses stored energy to transform the bud sites to actual buds, while fan leaves still keep on sucking some of the plants energy to grow, expand roots, thicken the stem,,,,,, bla bla bla,,,,,,, to the end you don't need more energy to be created by the plant as much as you need the energy to be redirected to the buds via trimming. I hope you get my point as I tried to be a straight forward as possible ;)

Also try Half trim so you end up with fan leafs that aren't that big but still can create energy for the plant

I trim out a lot of my fan leaves, weekly actually, bcuz I gotta shit ton of under growth, im a first time grower but ive read that trimming fan leaves is a "good" thing bcuz ur lower budsites need light to get bigger... is this true? mine seems to THRIVE when I do it ~ check it out 18 days into flower...

It's hard to tell but yeh I do trim but only leafs that cover lower bud sites, try scrog, I still believe that more leafs= more energy produced

I guess that is tru, more surface area=more energy produced during photosynthesis, but I also know that with other plants, lower growth blocked out from the "sun" doesn't tend to thrive like the tops in full sun... guess its potato/pototo lol
