Aerogarden- Root tips growing towards light

HI everyone..I need some help.. I recently purchased an aerogarden, and stared germinating seeds in there...One problem...everytime the root tip grows out towards the light and the leafy part gets stuck in the sponges and rockwool cubes that i have in there. Why is this, and how can i get that to stop happening? Up until now I just flipped them by hand..but this seems like a weird phenomenon to me...what gives?

Thanks in advance for any info

You are planting them upside down in the AG. You want to plant them with the root that is sticking out of the seed facing down. Are you germing them before you put them in the AG or are you just putting the seeds directly into the AG??

I'm just dropping the seeds into the hole...it's happened everytime bar non. Root grows up while the leadves get stuck below.

I had the same problem!!! I stuck 3 seeds in the AG before germing, and they all started doin real funky things.

The reason being, is the sponge will not hold the seeds in place. You probably did like everyone else and just pried the AG vegatable seeds out the sponge and replaced them with your precious marijuana seeds, right? I actually purchased the "master gardener" kits, that has the empty pods and labels. And when you apply the seeds, the instructions say you have to use non toxic glue to hold seeds and sponge in place. I wouldnt risk it if you have good seeds. Just keep checking your germs, and if they pop out, tuck it back in deep, and make sure root is down,

I think i had to do that with every plant. With one, I even took the whole germed seed out the sponge, peeled the rest of the seed shell off myself, accidently dropped the seedling on the floor, and it just so happens to be the biggest plant in my AG right now. Plants are weird creatures.

dont do what i did though, just tuck em in, and read em a bedtime story

I have two Aerogarden deluxe's that i am using for vegging seedlings, clones and mothers. I would recommend germing them first. After they start to show the root, plant them in the AG with the root pointing down. Here is a good germination method WWW.GREENHOUSESEEDS.NL - Green House Seed Co. Amsterdam Since 1985. The problem i am having is after i get them to germ and show root, i plant them and they never seem to develop any further. It seems that no one can tell my why it is happening. It is really strange.

check your lights. So far my ag has worked fine.
when it comes to germn. i just take the seeds and drop them in only a cm down in the sponge......i put the ag on germ mode and let it do its thing.....a few days later ull be gold.

if by a chance still your plant "flips" just be carefull and remove it in the dark and flip it around.

another thing:: The aero garden is an AERO system....its not designed for rockwool. Its designed to grow strawberries. lol dont add shit to the system except for a light change and even still u can use the ag light till it reaches max......either cut the cord and extend that light and grow weak buds or get a hps and use the ag light for the side and bottom of the plants. The ag is great for clones and even vegging with some mylar assistance but get a better light for flower power!:joint:

My lights are working fine. I have two Aerogarden deluxe's that i am using for seedlings, clone vegging and mothers. I have them in this xs homebox buy-the-homebox.com - universal indoor grow box kit with a fan. I have this homebox buy-the-homebox.com - universal indoor grow box kit with a flood and drain system and a 400w Super HPS, two fans and a 6" duct fan with a carbon filter, for a flowering room. For nutes i have the full line of Fox Farm and some Liquid Carma. I have some bag seeds starting rock wool cubes and some seed bank seeds in some rapid rooter sponges trimmed down to the size of a AG sponge. 1" Rock wool cubes will work for the AG, you just need to trim the cubes down. I am also using the AG sponges that came with my master gardener kit. The one Big Bud sprout i have going is in one of the rapid rooters and doing well. I am trying different methods to see what works best for my set up. I think i may have been soaking my seeds in water too long. If you check out the Green House link it says to soak them in water for 12 hrs and then put the in damp paper towel. I have been soaking them for 24-48 hrs or until they cracked. I am trying some fresh ones today with some of this Seed Germination Tips and Techniques - Seed Germination Products. and only for 12 hrs. Hopefully i can get my AG full of sprouts soon. I have been germing the seeds and putting them in the AG sponges the correct way with the root down but they never develop any further. I think by soaking them too long i may have ben drowning them.

i'm a newbie but germinating is very easy take seeds put them in wet paper towel put that in a ziplock stick that in a drawer somewhere check in 24 hours make sure towel is still damp mine usually take 2-3 days then i plant them (i'm using peat pellets and i only JUST cover the seed ultra lightly when i plant and i get a 90% return on my seeds (i'm on this thread because i'm looking to try an aero setup

i've also just tossed my seeds in a pellet without germinating but always barely cover it when you put them in to deep sometimes they just quit tryin .lazy bastards

I have an Aerogarden 6 and I was trying to figure out what mode would be best to germinate. I set it on salads because i read a ton of other peoples threads saying that. but i just set my seeds in the sponges last night. so i cant say this does or doesnt work yet. You said you set yours to germ mode so i was just curious if mine doesnt have that or if it is know as another term or what?

I favor the paper towel method. I've tried other methods, but had the best results using the paper towel method. Check out this link:

I'm having the same issue. The root doesn't anchor itself and it tips over or gets really weak. I was wondering if I could sprinkle some soil to secure the seed in place?

"The instructions say you have to use non toxic glue to hold seeds and sponge in place."

Lol

Not sure if you got a refurb with a manual that was re-written as a joke. In seedling stage, what do you think would happen if the seed was glued in some way, shape or form?
The circular label you can use atop of the net's can be glued. I've never glued them and I sure as hell would not glue the seed.

Germinate the seed in paper towel until the tap root is no longer then 2 cm. (The longer it is the more prone it will be to becoming damaged)
Take the Sponges that you have from either the original setup or via the master growing kit. (If original, remove the original seed from the sponge and dispose of it)

Take a chop Stick and burrough a hole from the top of the sponge right through to the bottom. (Till it pops out the bottom) You are basically encouraging root growth directly down rather then to the sides of the sponge.
Once prepped, take the germinated seed tap root down and "gently" drop the seed into the top of the sponge (where you would expect it to go).

DO NOT PUSH IT DOWN. Just place it in there and leave it.

Now, take the small Plastic dome (if you have one, if not no worries). place that dome atop of the hole in the AG (Where your Net/Sponge/Seed reside)
Within 2 days you'll see it pop up.

Don't make it harder then it is.

And for god's sake, don't put anything in the sponge like glue or soil....

Good luck!

good luck!

Take an exacto knife and cut the sponge from top to bottom almost in half. Then put geminated seed in slot you've created with the root pointing down. Put sponge in casing and put that back into your AG. Then let it do its thing. Also you may want to add an air stone, your roots and plant will love it.

I would have to say this is harder than it needs to be. I use Rapid Rooters cut to size. Works perfectly. Stock AG seed packs have their seeds glued in and they work fine. But those sponge things suck for cannabis seedlings IMHO.
