Anyone have any good alternatives to store bought calibration solutions for pH pens?

I found a website with the pH of common household items and was basically wondering if i could calibrate my pen with some apple juice?

hahaha, let me know

I seriously doubt it. PH is probably not even a consideration in making apple juice and I doubt that it would be standardized. I just got some 7.0 last week; it's not expensive. The best way to buy it is in the packets. You can snip the top off one, put it in a coffee cup so it won't spill, use it for a few months then throw it away.

Yes, you can use 20 Mule Team Borax to make a standard solution of pH 9.2

You should also read the following article. It discusses that not all calibration solutions are suitable and might cause you to miscalibrate your monitor. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-02/rhf/index.php
