cant quite tell whats going on with this ballast/bulb. Lamp(solistek 4000k MH) fires for 10 sec blue hue and then starts pulsing oranges and you can see waves in the bulb as it approaches full on then shuts off ballast fan continues to run after brief pause then no refire. This is my first digital .. I mostly used magnetic until pike electrical services kept destroying hundreds of dollars in magnetic ballasts while working on local power lines.

Is this a ballast or bulb issue.

problem answered while digital still continued to fail once I removed the timer the ballast and bulb continued like normal operation.
probably im guessing created by surges in electricity in the line... when the timer heated up from the flow of 1000w through it... it probably was developing shorts which caused break in the line.

Yep, get a heavy duty timer. Even at half of the continuous wattage my timers are rated for they get a little warm. Also a killawatt meter might help, i have had bad bulbs out of the pack and electronic ballast take a crap on me from a power outage, keeping extra bulbs (or old ones) and an extra ballast on hand is cheap insurance policy. Also those killawatt meters can help you figure out whats going on when you have problems sometimes.
