I've had 3 1000 wt ballast go bad. Two electronic switchable ones lasted 2 weeks each and then I hooked up a magnetic one that had been working for 5 months and it quit on me too. The co. has replaced the elctronic ones. I wonder is it something I'm doing wrong or just a faulty batch of ballasts...? I have them mounted to a wall with plenty of airflow...

are they 110V or 220v i think if your able to run them on 220v you'll have less trouble due to the fact its never under voltage....
They are 110 / 120 volt

my 400w ballast is an high bay light that i opened up and changed into my grow light ..its got wires that would let me wire it to 220v if i wanted to, if i go bigger with one more 400w or one 1k w i will wire 220v just for piece of mind...

Sounds like you could have low voltage at the receptacle. Measure that and get back to us with numbers.
I switched the ballast to another circuit -- maybe having too much load causes the ballast to go bad? --- I will try & measure soon...
