Been A while...time for some 12/12

Hey RIU,
Been absent a while, mostly because of work but thought i'd throw up an organic 12/12fs thread and update somewhat lackadaisically

Gonna do a godberry from freedom of seeds, og kush from dinafem, and a couple of norther lights (i think #5?) from 00seeds. Don't know a thing about this last breeders but hey, wtf its 12/12fs.

Soil will be my own personal blend, filling bottom half of the pot, top half with black gold plus perlite--can't exactly remember what's in my supersoil recipe it since its been cooking so damn long but i'm sure it'll be fine for this application; 6 gallon airpots--super awesome root structures, love 'em. Got a 400w induction (inda-gro), and 3 4' 4bulb T5s outfitted with zoomed flora suns and a couple 6500Ks. this is going to be a real straightforward grow though: seeds in tonight; lights 12/12 until they're done. Got a 540CFM extraction w/carbon filter in a 5x8x8 panda film room. basically sealed the room with gorilla tape. Water is pH 6.0 with a little calcium and some trace minerals--pristine well water. Temps will be within range soon enough, not too worried about it. Circulation fans will do their jobs (2, only 1 oscillator though). Like I said, should be pretty straightforward.

Haven't done a 12/12 in a little while; any tips from people who do this all the time would be great.
I'll try to do pictures at milestone moments rather than on weekly or daily or whatever arbitrary time schedule since it seems to just make me tweak about the little things to update frequently. So i'm thinking emergence, sex, buds, trichs, harvest.
Happy to oblige to reasonable requests
peace and love,

I did 12/12 from seed, organic, start with rich soil, top dress during early flower, top dress again during mid flower, water + molasses to finish, got some good product in the end. Yield seemed unaffected, got about 2 oz from one plant in a 5 gallon container.

Hmm, i was under the impression that SS can be too hot for seedling roots, not the case? last I checked the people running supersoil mixes were using something a little lighter in the top half of their containers--what's the data on this? or are yall saying that because it's been cooking for so long, it's likely not that hot?

If you're soil is hot and burning your roots then it is not done composting.

by hot I just mean too much nutrients, generally N-burn, not the temperature of the soil.

Seedlings should just be in some unamended dirt, maybe some worm castings, I do mine in an even parts peat moss/perlite/compost combo.

And if your soil is so rich that it is going to burn your plants then putting that hot soil in the lower half of the pot won't help you. Your roots will be down there in a few days, week at a most. Your plant doesn't grow some resistance to being overfertilized in the few days after you transplant.

I don't know why people would put anything at the bottom of the pot...there is no science behind it and the anecdotal evidence is weak as fuck too. You can't bring up supersoil without someone chiming in about how it's a crap method.

Yeah i never really understood the theory of layered soil but then again, it never seemed to really cause problems in the runs I've done with my own amended and cooked soil blends. So, here, I just mixed it all together and will now have some pretty rich soil (1/3) with some fairly even soil (2/3) to make some partially amended soil, fully mixed soil. I'll be paying attention to things and have plenty of shit on hand to address issues should they emerge but we're off to the races now, so we'll see how it goes. Probably going to do a Coco-Perlite hempy 12/12FS using only OC+ and a little calmag next time around just to compare experiences. I love the organics, but its been so long since I've tried anything else, I wanted to remind myself why I do it the way i do it!

So 2/4 NL from 00 Seeds popped last week sometime; starting two more (nebula from paradise) to see if I can get 4 girls going to make up for the poor germ. rate. I soaked in a solution of fish hydrolysate (1tsp/cup water) for 24 hours then into moist soil, watered in. For the nebulas I'm just doing straight water, soak until they sink method. But either way, we're finally off to the races!

Next round will probably be in a hempy mix (coco/perlite) with OC+, purple trainwreck. I'm thinking 2 week veg.

now I'm rambling...
oh well here we go!

As I mentioned, i've been having trouble with germination--probably some old seed stock. In any case, decided to switch it up and go back to an 18/6 veg, top once, then flower, except this is going to be tricky since I have one dieselicious I'm wating for germination on, one nebula that just showed cotelydon, one nebula that's got its first set of true leavs, one northern lights that is super sluggish, and one that is exactly where it should be at 2 wksveg. I'm thinking its time for a seperate veg room...
anyway we'll see what we can do with this round.
take it easy, :joint: :joint:

So here's whats happening: I went to plant out a Dieselicious I had soaked when it looked like my last nebula wasn't going to pop. I went to plant my dieselicious and found little nebula cotelydons emerging from the planter. So i scrambled up some modified hempy mix with some OC plus, erected a new 2gallon airpot and planted the dieselicious there. I also had no catch tray for this container so i wedged it in a 5 gallon bucket. It donned on me that this might actually be a thing--it might be a way for me to have some kind of modified passive hydro type setup. The 5 gallon bucket will largely act as a catch tray until the root system is well developed. At that point, and since this particular kind of air pot has a grid (i.e. open) bottom, roots can grow through the bottom of the container. Keeping water and a running air stone in the bottom of the 5 gallon bucket will slowly turn this into a modified dwc/hempy/regular soil container. This is at least a setup i could feel somewhat comfortable going away for a little longer on--even if the pump dies, no? So we'll see how this goes on this round.
just a head's up!

I would be super interested to see any pics or video of your experiment!

Time to catch up on the events. I ended up with 3/4 Northern Lights which I topped Uncle Ben style. Two responded normally and one which was the super sluggish one, shot out 3 instead of 4 colas. That was a while ago, and they're 2-3 weeks away from being done. Decent growth, seems pretty happy for the super soil they're in. Probably pull 3-4 oz off of two of them and 1.5-2 off of the sluggish one. Ok that's fine whatever. I didn't really put in a whole hell of a lot of effort on that and the front end was super complicated by the 12/12 from seed buisness--i can never seem to get 12/12 from seed to work for me.
Anywho, checked the garden journal and the seedstock was indeed rather old. so i picked up some new stuff, all humboldt seed organisation genetics. I've also set up a veg room with space for ~6 plants to get going.
I've got two contianers of genovese basil and 4 of HSO's purple trainwreck in veg right now. I'm doing these with DocBud's coco-coir + perlite hempy (25%:75% mix). For nutes I'm using OC+ and i'll adjust pH and calcium (w/calmag) as needed. One note on these: they're not "true hempy" buckets. Rather, they're 3 gallon airpots whose bottoms are grids so that they're open and will allow the roots to grow through them. I've placed two containers per big rubbermade (28" x 16" x 6") totes (the shallow kind) as major catch trays. I've also got air stones in each catch tray. This is kind of a hempy style modified passive hydro system. I'm going to veg these until the NL is done, top them UB style again, and go right into flowering.
But wait, Dr.J, aren't you a fan of organic growing? whats all of this passive hydro, synthetic nutrients stuff we're hearing??
Never fear friends, I'll cook up a new batch of supersoil while I'm working out these purple trainwrecks. I'm not abandoning organic growing, just interested in working in some of these super KISS grows, especially when this particular style of passive hydro will allow me to move around alittle more freely without having to worry about the gals so very much.

In other news, I've picked up an upright frost-free freezer to help me with my curing. I've done freezer curing once and found it totally comparable to jar'n'burp so I'm happy to have a way to get my buds curing that requires very little from me. Anywho, I'll pop some pics of the NL up sometime soon to give a sense of how that fiasco went. Then i'll get on keeping everyone up to speed on the OC+ modified hempy / SIP with Purple Trainwreck.

After that probably be back to a good ole supersoil organic grow for Bubba's gift, and then do an OC+SIP again for a freebies grow, then perhaps over to some amherst sour diesel.
Holler if you've got questions or interests or just want to hit me up!
be easy,

Nothing impressive but it was, like I said, a fucked up grow.

Getting psyched to freezer cure these nonetheless and will be happy to run some purple trainwreck in what will hopefully be a better controlled, better tended garden.

Top those baby girls a couple times before you go into flower next time brother! you'll get a nice bush and more bud.

I top once just above the second node when the plant has about 6 sets of leaves. Don't care too much for an unpredictable bushy growth pattern. thanks for your input though.

Right on, just call me 70's porn cause I am all about the bush! I'll top a couple of times, get the plant it would be at the height I would switch to flower. Then I cut that bitch down to half. This final butchering will sprout the last branches I need to make the bush full and the stalk at the bottom nice and fat.
